O.K. this is probably brought up 100 times a week. But I used the search with several key words and have not found anything.

How do you store water long term. I have been using 55 gallon food grade barrels treated with bleach and then sealed and rotating every two years. I have not had to use the water except to water plants when I rotated and now I am seeing differing opinions.

Can some one point me in the right direction? Or give there opinions? Or even just link a thread. I dont know how to access the archives.

So what says the hive mind??

Off to Google.

Everytime we have soda... We clean out the 2 liter, and put fresh water in them. Every year (or two or so) we empty them out (on our trees) and put fresh water back in them.

We fill every spare inch of (unseen) space with them... Under beds, under the house, etc... And they don't cost anything, and I have yet to have one leak...

I have invested in several of the five gallong jugs, and have them, too... But I like the 2 liters, because they are *cheap.*

True. We bought and moved into this house about a year ago. I am getting the garage back together. ( Had to do work to the house first) and when I can get the other fridge/freezer up. I do this also with the 2 liters as a source and as a way to keep food cool if power goes down.

I forgot the mix that I was using for the big barrels though. It is written down but it was like 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons so I multiplied that to 55 gallons and treated. i think a 1/4 cup maybe. I know I will have to filter it when I use it but I am doubting myself now after reading but I cant find definitive info and I cant remember where I found the original info.

I plan to pick upp some of the LCI cans soon also.

I do remember seeing a thread on using a certain type of Pool SHock. can anyone point me towards that thread?

I will see if I can get the stupid search function to work.

ETA:  never mind I found it.

You're doing it right. What are you confused about? 55 gallon barrels treated with bleach and rotated every couple of years... You're GTG.

Only thing I'd add is: do you have a reliable way to refill those barrels? And filter/purify the new water? If so then you're done, if not then you've got work to do.

If you're adding a teaspoon of bleach to every 5 gallons of water, you shouldn't have to filter.
Also: Keep water storage out of sunlight (which promotes bacterial growth).

No, you still need to filter. If we're talking drinking water here then filtration is still necessary, as purification with bleach is only going to address the issue of biological organisms. There is lots of other shit in the water aside from the beasties that you don't want to drink.

Filter first, even if it's just through a cloth of some type. Then purify.

Of course, if it's stored city water then it's already probably fairly clean... But whatever you replace it with probably needs filtering first.

James, or any one else,
are the barrels on concrete, and if so, does the barrel's weight harm the slab, or are they GTG. (I have four and counting)

thanks for the link, I saved the pages to hard drive.

You're doing just fine as long as they are stored out of a significant light source.  If they are exposed to sunlight (even through a window) then you might want to up your rotation cycle some to a year or so.
