I'm rather new to preparedness and this forum so let me explain like this.
Preparedness and Musical Chairs. Much like the game musical chairs, preparedness requiers developing a strategy of winning. Any elementary school child can tell you, to win at musical chairs you need to always hover around a nearby chair. When the music stops, proximity wins the day. As fewer and fewer chairs are left this becomes more difficult. There will be more time when you are forced to be at the back of a chair. To get around this a child will learn to minimize the time away from the front of a chair. They will linger at the front and when forced to the sides or back of the chair they will rapidly move to secure a place nearer the front. When the music stops, being prepared to grab one of the remaining seats is key to winning. Being prepared is very similar. When a catasthrophy occurs and the music stops, those that are prepared will win, or at least stay in the game longer. Having long term food, potable water, a secure shelter, and the means and mindset to protect it are the rules of the game. The Difference Between Knowing the Rules and Understanding the Rules. Buying long term food supplies, water containers, portale cooking stove, as well as other items you deem necessary is "knowing" the rules. But like a child that has had the rules of musical chairs explained to them they will not "understand" the finer points of the game. Suchas hovering around the front of a chair. They will march around in a circle waiting for the music to stop. Only then will they begin looking for a place to sit. As chair after chair becomes occupied, they turn and look for an open spot. As they move to a vacant chair it becomes taken. They are out of the game. This is where I see myself. Walking around the chairs, knowing there is more to learn and hoping the music doesn't stop until I "understand" the rules. So if I ask a silly question from time to time it's just because I'm trying to keep my eye on an open chair. Thanks for reading. |

Personally, I see preparedness as having my own folding lawn chair that I'm carrying around. Sure, its no recliner... but its sure better than fighting over 3 chairs for 10 people and certainly better than sitting on the concrete. Welcome to SF! I'm sure PA22-400 will be along shortly. |

I get on here maybe 2 or 3 times a day and I'm here to tell you they're a great group of guys (and gals) with a wealth of knowledge! I really think I learn something new everyday. Again, welcome! |

That's one way to look at it. Now imagine if the area on the concrete was flooded. Preparedness to me is a life raft. Even if the water is only knee deep it will be really really uncomfortable if you're not ready just in case it comes. |

Do you have a plan for; fire? severe weather? pregnancy? job loss? vehicle loss? Making a plan will only cost the time and paper to write it on. A plan will enable you to organize your actions and purchases in the future Quoted:
Prepare for the most likely first and the least likely last. So you ask; what is the most likely event? Quoted:
Start by thinking back over the last 20 years of your life and what emergencies you faced. Things like: flood loss of employment fire tornado blizzard loss of electricity car died out on the road (happened to me tonight 15 miles out of town - 15 degrees and very windy out) etc. these are things that will probably happen again. take steps to deal with those problems first. SF History—has been posted in SF since I joined the SF: 3 SF members that are recovering from job loss homes lost to fire posted here in SF 5 or more BOVs totaled by accident 5 now 7 now probably more new little SFers born 1 SF family has suffered the loss of a child to illness. Visits to the ER due to infection, injury, and insect sting allergy 5 or more hurricanes 1 SFer had to stay a week in the hospital How should you live your life now that you are a survivalist? Quoted:
