Have any of you ever thought about useing a metal grain bin as a bol. They are simple(bolt, nut, metal sheets)and sturdy . Older used ones arent that pricey and a couple of guys can put them up pretty easie with electric impact wrench(me and dad have put up 5 or 6 ourselves, for actual grain storage) and some bin jacks, I think with a little work they could be pretty nice.....I think. Your thoughts.. plus it would be easiey to really lock it up tight and low key....
p.s. first thread be nice

Quite awhile ago, I remember seeing some pictures of a few that people had decorated and made into unique living spaces.  Not survival oriented, per se.  Try google.

relatively fire resistant......22 lr will turn it to swiss cheese.....hard to heat.

If you want us to be nice then you have to be a Tier One Survivalist

Your BOV needs to be a 4x4 powered by a Cummins Turbo Diesel
guns you need
AR
12 gage pump shotgun
semi-auto handgun 9mm or larger
308 bolt gun
your BOL needs to be a rural location you may use a Monolithic dome home or a shipping container
you need a tactical spouse and your kids need to be tactical too.

fail anywhere on the list and you better just yell "I'm a poser" so folks will let you go, except for being a poser of course.

I don't think MA is ready to live in a grain box.

I think if you put a 12 foot bin, inside of a 15' diameter (or a 15 inside an 18 ft , and filled the void with concrete (18 in wall thickness).... you'd have something pretty dang survivable; and easy to put a wood stove in the center....

A good idea for a stealthy "cabin" in  rural areas.

havent tried it but i dnt think an 22 would turn it to swiss cheese. bins are made of pretty thick steel. the lower portions are the thickest gauge on it also wouldnt stand up to an AR but wat normal house can? remember they have to hold thousands of pounds of grain in all kinds of weather. and if u had it spray insulated it would be pretty warm in the winter. could even have an upstairs if ya wanted

I like the low key aspect. Probably wouldn't attract much attention in an area where they are common.

I guess you could cart one in to a remote area in pieces and assemble on site.

.

Funny you should mention this.  I know where there are 2 of them that haven't been in use in a few years and was wondering if I could get them cheap to move them to our BOL and do the same thing.

Good idea.

I've seen some recently and thought about it.

They could be an excellent solution for the right mindset. Better [more space] than a container in some ways.

Easily converted to living space and insulated.

Dig a hole in one area of it for protection.

Here's an article, pretty low budget and rough but it works for them.

Nothing screams "I have food" more than a grain silo. Evry MZB that can see it will "have" to check it out.

I thought the same but wouldnt a house and the fact that ur still Living there make them think you have food also? In my area they be stoping alot to check and they are very easey to lock up tight to keep people out. Plus a 45 might discourage that sort of thing

I would think that there would be a major condensation problem in one without doing some ventilation/insulating.  Especially with more than one or two people sleeping in it at night.

You also would need to cut some gun ports in the sides of it!

You will need to think about some kind of tornado shelter if you live in tornado country. They will shred a grain bin to ribbons.

Poseur!

Everyone knows shipping containers aren't bulletproof - how will you fend off the hordes of MZBs during the Cat 5 Tornado with a BOL that isn't bullet proof or tornado proof?

I think the idea has merit.  Something to consider at the very least.

Be like sticking your head in a dinner bell everytime it rained.  As a kid I HATED building those things.  As the smallest of the work team, my unlucky job was to be on the inside holding the bolts, with a wrench, while the guy on the outside hammered away with an electric impact wrench.  They don't make enough hearing protection for a full day of that crap.

I'd have to think that other than a place to hide, I don't see much value in them as a shelter.  Like someone above said, high winds will pick those things up and wad them up like paper..

Bigger poser, everyone knows tornadoes are rated using the Fujita scale not categories like the Saffir/Simpson hurricane scale.

Great idea, if you could dig a hole and sink the first floor into a basement that would be slick. Shoot the inside and out side with shotcrete and it would be pretty insulated and solid.
