I ran across this blog of a family that raised 7 ducks, and were getting 7 eggs a day by 26 weeks
Khaki Campbell ducks http://www.newagrarian.com/category/ducks/ I am curious if anyone here has had any experience with ducks. I don't like the idea of raising chickens as I find them less aesthetically pleasing and rather dumb. However ducks seem much more appealing both aesthetically and auditorily. Anyone? |

It has been quite a while but I did the suburban backyard duck thing. I even had Khaki Campbells. I also had some Mallards and Muskovy ducks.
The eggs were very good tasting. We found that using corn instead of Purina duck chow gave us better tasting eggs. The ducks were free range so would eat bugs, etc. We had an excess of eggs and my next door neighbor loved the eggs for baking. They made great pound cakes. The downside is that ducks will tear your yard to pieces with their large feet, they can be messy, etc. If you plan to have them penned up, then no problem. |

There are a couple of sections in the Foxfire books about ducks. According to them, it was difficult to get the ducks to lay in a place where it was easy to find the eggs.
The ducks were multi-purpose, though. They'd use the feathers for pillows and mattresses. So... you got that going for you. ;) |

I have a little experience. 6 at a time and set em free. Guess there are about 30 to 40 on the pond behind the house now. Wife had one as a pet for a while. He wouldn't leave for a long time. They are really messy! But fun to watch. http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/WhiteWolfe/Ducks/ |
