The wife and I discussed the issue and decided to start prepping. How much are we going to prep? We don't know, but we figured we should start now a little bit at a time every time we go grocery shopping.

Anyway, this what we started with. We decided to stock up on some of the stuff that we use regularly and be able to rotate it.

10 corn
5 green beans
5 carrots
5 peas
5 chef boyarde
paper plates
plastic cups

We also have 3 gallons of water that we rotate. We're going to get more though since 1 gal / day / person minimum. We also bought some 3 day bags from LAPG to use as our bug out bags We're going for 2 LAPG tactical pants, 5 underwear, 5 tshirts, 5 socks, 2 med kits and other gear (fixed knives, multi tools, tape, 550 cord, fire spark tool, etc)

I think we off to a good start. Suggestions?

Also, what does the hive say about canned beans? Recommendations for taste vs price? Some pics I took from my local WM.

Welcome to the SF

Do you have a plan for;
fire?
severe weather?
pregnancy?
job loss?
vehicle loss?

Making a plan will only cost the time and paper to write it on.  A plan will enable you to organize your actions and purchases in the future

Quoted:
Prepare for the most likely first and the least likely last.

So you ask; what is the most likely event?

Quoted:
Start by thinking back over the last 20 years of your life and what emergencies you faced. Things like:

flood
loss of employment
fire
tornado
blizzard
loss of electricity
car died out on the road (happened to me tonight 15 miles out of town - 15 degrees and very windy out)
etc.

these are things that will probably happen again. take steps to deal with those problems first.

SF History—has been posted in SF since I joined the SF:
3 SF members that are recovering from job loss
homes lost to fire posted here in SF
5 or more BOVs totaled by accident
5 now 7 now probably more new little SFers born
1 SF family has suffered the loss of a child to illness.
Visits to the ER due to infection, injury, and insect sting allergy
5 or more hurricanes
1 SFer had to stay a week in the hospital

How should you live your life now that you are a survivalist?
Quoted:
Live like "it" will never happen, prep like "it" will.

As far as the beans go, I would try out a half dozen or more different kinds and stock what you like.  Personally I stock dried beans and cook them myself, but this does require more water and time.  Not just heat and eat.

Doc

Oh yeah, looks like a real good start.  Just date what you purchased, and rotate it through your regular food.

Welcome

Much to learn here and from good folks.

As for canned goods, I tend to buy common items buy the case and rotate from the 'prep' pantry to the 'daily use' pantry. Obviously the oldest is moved to daily use. Before long, you'll get a quantity / rotation routine established.

Oh, and don't forget the TP fort.

Man, figure out a way to capture the methane from all them beans and you're set!!!

Make sure you have plenty of TP....what goes in must come out.

How about can openers? Get a crapload of P-38's and put 'em everywhere.

More water STAT.

A water filter in the BOBs wouldn't be a bad idea.

Protus has a really good thread to get you started on the BOB:

I agree you are off to a good start, you seem to have the right attitude. I would suggest setting a goal and priority list of things you want to acquire or accomplish.

Good luck,

PS stay out of the pics of your preps thread unless you want some serious motivation or serious feelings of inadequacy.

It's a great start, TracSol.  It's cool that your wife is on board, too.

Thanks for the tips folks. I'll try a can of each of the beans and see which we like better. We're always stocked on TP. I bought some huge packs at the last BX Case Lot sale. I'm definitely going to get more water for storage. I'm thinking 3 gallons per person per day. Speaking of which, we should stock up on powdered milk for our toddler. Our short term goal is to survive 3 days, either at home or in route to another location.

It's true, "being prepared" entails a lot more than just having food and water. One idea I got from a Katrina survivor is to scan all your ID's, passports and important paperwork onto a thumbdrive. I've already started this process and will have 3 copies.

We're working on the financial aspect at the moment (paying off debt and adding to the savings fund). I'm pretty set employment wise since I'm in the military and have 10 years left before I retire, but I'd like to eventually save up 6 months of pay.

Again, thanks guys.
