Ive been pulling some killer hours here as of late , Point in case I only have worked 2 days this week and have over 40 hours ,not counting holiday pay . Tonight I was working close to home and my phone rings at 1015 . It was my fiancee , asking did we have power where we were at , yep why , our power was out. She then explained we had no flashlights no candles even though she thought she has saw some around the house. I told her to pull the drawer open under the phone and reach down on the side closest to her , she responded "you jack ass"   it was a led mag light ready to go .She told me she was getting jamie ready for bed when it went out and after stumbling around in the dark she finally found his wind up led flash light he keeps on his head board.

I spent the next 15 minutes explaining where there was  a flash light somewhere  close by in every room in the house , the where 3 different stashes of batteries were but all the flash light should be GTG , then where candles and lanterns and there fuel were . After a little decision I told her I would be more clear in where things were and to move a few things upstairs from the basement to make it easier for her to find. This weekend Im going to walk her though the house and show her each and every one and the differences , like on my side of the bed I have a low power led and a streamlight , at my computer desk I have a  led headlamp and a surefire ect . I only keep one pack of candles up stairs because I just donot want to clutter the place up , I figure one pack is plenty enough upstairs , 3 9 hour candles should give you plenty of time to go to the basement for more .

Another slightly humorous side note , she said well if it stays off much longer it was going to get right hot in the house with out the AC . So I told her to go to the back yard and go sleep in the camper . She would  have lights , hot water , better air flow/ fans and even AC if she cranked up the genny , her response , thats crazy , I said fine Ill have the camper bed and AC all to my self . I got home around 12 and the power came on about the time I dosed off on the couch.

Oh yeah and she isnt mad , she was already asleep when I got home so I just hit the couch , a. because it is cooler then the bed , b. if I woke her up she would have been mad . I did stop at wally world last night and buy another flashlight and put on her purse before I went to bed. This morn she woke me up with it , 115 lumens .. is really bright when coming out of a deep slumber . It was one of those new colman 3 led lights with the one high power and the 2 low power in red and green LEDs.

Just tested it against my surefire 90 lumen .... the colman is brighter . Might have to pick up another for me ,but I did not pick up the one I thought I did this one has no red green . For 20 some bucks not a bad light at all.

Can I make a sugestion ?, Put all the candles in the basement in a locked box and pull out only in the event of EOTWAWKI and buy several led lanterns instead. I love the raovac sportsman extreme and have 3 of them.
They are easier and way safer and throw way more light than a candle. Candles have two places IMHO....Romance and EOTWAWKI. Why take the chance of burning down the house over a couple hour or days
of a power outage when 10 bucks worth of batteries will get you thru(several days).

I have five children and I agree with this statement.  The last thing I need is a burned child, or a fire.  We have candles and oil lanterns both, but they are not going to be used (except for testing and practice) unless there is a long term situation.  Before the days of the LED bulbs, our practice was different, but now we use the battery devices.

The nice thing about LEDs is that you can get usable light at very low power, way after batteries would be exhausted for incandescent lights.  I put a white led on a set of d cells (3 of them) and it burned for seven months solid still producing usable light (albeit very dim).  I will concur with the assessment.  We buy cheap candles after the holidays, but they are NOT for household lighting.
