I was looking at picking up a short wave radio receiver and I became bogged down with all the choices available. I'm not quite sure where to start. I'd be using it for mainly a hobby and perhaps when an emergency situation would arise.
I'm looking for something portable, preferably runs on AA batteries. LCD display would be nice. Headphone and perhaps an external antenna jack? I'd like to keep the price under $100. That's about all I got for now. I'm ignorant on the technical side of these radios and I was hoping someone could enlighten me a bit or perhaps post a link to point me in the right direction. I've only used AM/FM radios and an old Bearcat police scanner. Thanks! |

I think this is one of the better ones, but a little over your budget.

I have a Sony ICF-SW7600GR and it does very well and it's still made in Japan so the quality is better than the Chicoms. +1 Raise your budget and look here. I have this one- it is excellent for a cheap portable and receives SSB. this, mine has been flawless and does everything I need it to do. J- |
| I had a Grundig S350 that I bought off craigslist for $40 and it went tits up a few weeks after I bought it. I'd probably buy a Sony if I were going to buy another but now I have Ham radios that will pick up SW and Wx freqs, so I just go that route now. |

Thanks for the input guys! In 2004 I got re interested in getting a SW receiver like I used to listen to when I was a kid. Bought the Kaito for about $90. It worked just OK, very hard to tune, but it did work with a long wire antenna. Then I wasted money an a pair of GMRS radio's that claimed 20 miles....Ha .... try maybe 2miles on a good day! Got to talking to an old friend that became a Ham but he was just a Tech. He got me involved with a local Amateur club and WOW. I got my Tech lic in Dec. 2005 Passed Code and General, then got Extra in less than a year. I have communicated all around the world in all modes including digital. I even had a conversation with Mr. Garriot in the International Space Station on Oct. 22, 2008. I am more than ready for SHTF So now I warn you.........Be care full Of BRD it can also stand for Black Radio Disease |
| about 15 years ago, i picked up a grundig for $40 on clearance. it's been a great little radio. easy to tune, has great reception and has survived my kids banging it around. assuming grundig hasn't gone down hill since i bought mine, i whole heartedly recommend the brand. |
