the SHTF weapons thread got me thinking. I would think it would be smart to have a few weapons in the same cal. I have started to downsize my collection and try to get everything lined up. I think a AR, 870, 9mm x2, 308 and a 45 will do. I dont have time to to try to find a 22 in a rifle but I do have a 22lr revolver.

I have downsized a bit myself to keep common caliber rifles.  I have gotten rid of quite a few "projects" that I either lost interest in or just don't want to put money into them.  I keep a battery of AR's, AK's, 9mm, 45's, 308's, 12ga and 22's.  There are a few odd calibers in there, but thats just the collector in me.  The "battery" that I keep all have a specific purpose.  Anything past that is just a "want".

No time to pick up a Ruger 10/22.

Every pawn shop or Nickel Saver in America probably has one listed.  Add some 25 rd. mags and you are done with the rest of the afternoon to spare.  Bulk packs are still cheap(ish) on a $$/rd.  Just Sayin'...IMHO/YMMV.

A 22lr is a easy pick up as side most pawn and gun shops have them at Dicks sporting goods they have a single shot 22lr for $99. Also for pistol look around your area and see what most local LEO carry. I found most guy shops around my area carry a lot more 45acp then 9mm because most the LEO around me carry 45acp and 40S&W .

Sorry not a big 9mm fan a lot of people say the JHP do great but how many people have 1,000+ of JHP? I have used the 9mm in Iraq with FMJ and it's not a round that from my personal experience I would place my life on with my choice. That's just me.

Add a .22lr rifle and stack some bricks of .22 into the ammo chest.

Since you already have the pistol,  it makes sense to add a bolt action and/or semi rifle to the collection.

there are no pawn shops in my area. I will be heading to the local gun shop but they are way over priced.

You don't have a DIck's Sporting Goods or a Walmart Super Center within 50 miles?

Our local gun stores are not known to be cheap,  but they do take in numerous used 22lrs and they don't seem to be total rip-offs.
It's not something you MUST buy in the next 2 days,  so,  keep your eyes open, be patient, and be a smart shopper.

Dont ever plan to bring a pistol to a gunfight, no modern handgun round performs well with FMJ, this isnt limited to 9mm.  In a SHTF, I dont plan on lugging around 1000+ rounds of handgun ammunition in the first place, 5 mags will do just fine.  If Im gonna hump 1000 rounds of anything, it would be for my primary (5.56) and carried in my ruck.  1000 rounds is about two to three times the amount Id want in a prepared bug out scenario.  For bug-in, the more ammo the merrier, but pistol ammo is always last on my shopping list.

Your primary considerations should be along the lines of "what is this for?"  In other words, why THIS particular round/platform combination?  Hunting or defense?  This topic has been beat to death in numerous threads, so I'll save the 5.56 vs .7.62 or 9mm vs .45ACP argument.  .22LR is an obvious must have; rounds are cheap, light, plentiful, and you can still use it as a hunting or defense platform in a pinch.  It's a great way to keep up your shooting skills without throwing thousands of dollars downrange.  Personally, I have stuck to 5.56, 9mm, and .22LR as my SHTF calibers, and have various platforms in each caliber.

If you are considering an on foot bugout, weight will be a MAJOR deciding factor in your choice of platform.  .22 pistols are just as useful as a .22 rifle, and for what you are using it for, a pistol might be a better choice considering weight and space.  I don't shoot at squirrels at 100m NOW... why would I be doing that in a situation where every round could determine whether or not i eat for the day?  In terms of 5.56, I see it as a good compromise of power vs weight/cost.

9mm.... hahha well, there is no argument there.  It is cheaper than .45, I can fit more rounds per mag, and I shoot better with it.  Those are all personal opinions, so YMMV.

Think:  main battle rifle with a common calibar (used by military and always available) and the availabity of interchangable parts.  SHTF dictates that you may/probably will be in a fight at some point or at least appear to be someone that no one else intends to fuck with for any reason.  .22 will not handle it.  Pistol is always secondary.  Think what will be the first purchase with accompaning parts/magazines/ammo and go from there .........
Just my personal thought.

If you have to bug out which 2 will you take. Certainly not all 6 of your weapons+ammo+your supplies, you'll be tired as hell inside of 2 miles. Maybe in your bug out bag put the .22 and hand carry your AR.

why would one need shitty aftermarket mags when the factory 10 roungers last for decades? Do you think he is going to be attacked by a heard of squirrels on a crack binge?  Or do you think he needs to spend money to buy mags that are made from a lesser quality?  my mags for my 10/22 are 40+ years old and they still go bang......... wtf is wrong with them?>
