I've heard a little about people burying some essentials and am seriously considering it. I've heard about the pvc pipe and all, but am wondering what some of you might be doing.
What are you putting away? How much? What are you using to keep these things safe and useable? |

50 gallon olive barrels give you a lot more room than PVC pipe and are a lot cheaper $15 to $20 around here. Since it is so warm here in the summer I keep most of my MRE's buried and safe from wildfires & thieves. They are a bit of a pain to bury but if this old guy can do it anyone can. They can hold a lot of ammo & guns also. It sure gives a bit of security knowing things are safe & spread out and the cool stable temps will give the food & ammo maximum life.
I put a 2 liter bottle in each barrel with the pellet type moisture absorbers and have never had a problem in over 20 years. I cut a piece of tarp or heavy plastic over the lid before I cover it to help shed water away from the lid. I never thought that the PVC pipe method was worth all the expense for so little storage capacity and they are a lot harder to open & reseal . Red |

opsec This. I can say think of where you may be bugging out and what items you may find useful to get you there. What things would you like to have access to but don;t want to carry around all the time. GPS, maps, and photographs are useful to get you back to it. |

I'm going to start digging around and see if I can find some of you guy's loot. ![]() I think you will have much better luck just looking in the average gun guys house and going into the gun cabinet or get them off the wall. But if you are in my area that has been logged & mined for a hundred years and the ground is filled with tons of metal ,go for it. I forgot to mention the area is full of hot rocks, great for using a metal detector. And that is if I didn't take the CAT and push 50 tons of rock or scrap metal over it after it was buried. Who knows I could have put my MRE's on the thousands of acres of BLM land around me. Red |

The only thing I have ever buried is (are?) two Walther stainless steel PPKs in separate PVC containers at two very widely separated locations.
I stuck a handful of oxygen absorbers and a 50 count box of ammo in with each one. Figured that if guns were ever actually confiscated these might come in handy. |

If you bury a PVC pipe or a 55 gallon steel or plastic drum, don't expect to pull it out of the ground.
You're going to empty the contents and move on as quickly as possible leaving the container behind. So keep that in mind when you decide where to bury it and how deep. Obviously you'll need plenty of privacy to bury it and extract the contents when needed. |

Instead of direct burying, consider a vault. For instance, dig a hole, fill bottom with gravel for drainage.
Use cinderblocks and mortar to make a rudimentary vault with 4 sides. Fabricate a top out of reinforced concrete like a septic tank has, or use a piece of steel. Place your sealed containers in the vault. Then cover with a modest layer of soil, turf, whatever. All depends on how much privacy you have to fabricate it, but it would be nice to dig only several inches, grab a rope or steel cable and pull the lid off. Simpler method , but not as sturdy, you could get one of the big RubberMaid style containers with the lids, dig a hole for it, and place your sealed buckets or whatever inside the rubbermaid vault. Making a drain hole in it is optional based on your climate and soil consistancy. There is a lot of background to the art of caching. Not just HOW to cache something, but where to put caches, how to retrieve them, how to keep others from finding it, et etc etc. Just suggesting there is more to it than just burying something. |

Unless of course... http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/Darkninja90/OPSEC.png?t=1268439170 Its said that the only way to keep a secret that is known by more than one peorson is to kill the other person. So are you sure you want to know the answer to your question? LOL |

There have been a number of good threads about this on this site, but they are gone. It kind of sucks how the wheel has to be continually reinvented on this site. was thinking the same thing. We need teh ability to "oracle" information , like ammo oracle. Caching oracle. Starting a garden oracle. Glock v 1911 oracle. same stuff keeps wasting bandwidth over and over and over |
