Its so true, too.

An armed man with hungry kids is scarier than any of those sheeple soccer moms. |

I can tell you that when law and order does finally go in society, many "scores" will be settled by those who believe they have been done wrong. I don't know the time frame of how this will happen of course, but I believe there will be a finite moment, probably specific to every area, where the balance tips to the other side. The following few days / weeks will be the worst I think, because all the hardship leading up to that moment will just fuel their animalistic "relase". Scary shit for sure. |

I live in WV, and have quite a few of that type of individuals living around me.
The entitlement class, in other words. The best defense, I believe, is networking with other preppers that live close to you. It's kind of like a small scale N.A.T.O. If you don't have a large family, and I don't, this is the only way. If a friend comes under attack, he hops on the radio and calls for help. Every available person comes running, ready to help. It's a "mutual aid agreement", if you will. It's kind of like a modern day Three Musketeers. All for one, and one for all! Unfortunately, I have found very few "Musketeers" around me. Yes, the numbers do not favor us. Fortunately, I'm a Survivalist, and not a mathematician! |

ETA, I'm not saying it's wrong to trust your neighbors, just don't trust your neighbors.

I agree with what you said about neighbors. Just because they are your neighbors, doesn't, mean you can trust them. Friends are friends, whether they are neighbors or not. Enemies are enemies, whether they are neighbors or not. |

| I was having lunch with a friend of mine from church. He's a good person, a shooting buddy and even hangs out here a bit. He said something during lunch that chilled me to the bone. He lost his job under really unfair circumstances and his boss was very abusive in the process. While telling me the story he said, IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, "I think I'm gonna pay him a visit when the shit breaks." Eeeesh. This is a guy who's part of my CHURCH...who I TRUST. You never know what lurks in the bruised emotions of those around you. |

Western Rifle Shooters Association
MZB! Those three letters are enough to put a healthy dose of doom-enriched fear into any well prepped doomer right? It took me a while just to learn what those letters meant; when I did finally look them up in the acronym appendix of the doomer's bible I was silent. Mutant-Zombie-Bikers? What kind of fantasy freak group was I associating myself with? I just disliked the term because I couldn't get over the strange thoughts being conjured up in my head of a pack of deranged bikers on dirt bikes, old Harley's, quads, you name it with bleeding flesh and hollowed eyes all coming to attack us after a collapse. We would be all snug and happy in our doomsteads and BOLs but these MZBs would seek us out to destroy us. So yeah, I just couldn't deal with the term and didn't care for it much because it was too abstract and unrealistic. As time went on and my doomerish view of the world became more and more into focus I kept revisiting the MZB concept. What if the zombie in them didn't refer to some ghoulish character but rather someone who had lost everything and gained the 100 yard stare? Someone who has lost all sense of purpose but still feels the need to move forward? What if the mutant part referred to the transformation some unprepared over-suburbanized schmuck goes through as they realize everything they had worked for, all their competing with the Jones', all their mass consuming waste was all for naught and now had nowhere to go, nothing to live off of, and no knowledge of how to begin to survive? What if the biker part didn’t represent the biker gangs of today but rather the same misguided victim of suburbia taking their hobby bike with the last bit of gas and hitting the road in search of food for their overweight, weak, and defenseless family to never return? What if a MZB is simply a former misguided suburbia rat who is now discovering what it means to live and is angry at himself, angry at the world, and especially angry at those who are living a more comfortable post-collapse existence because they were prepared? As we move closer to the point where a total societal breakdown occurs one way or another it will become very apparent who is prepared and who isn’t. My head has been filled with fantasies that when the day comes when anarchy dominates over civilized life that those who weren’t prepared would be begging for help, doing anything they could to survive, but for the most part not resorting to violence. I stand corrected. A casual dinner visit with some close friends was my point of awakening to how ugly everything will be. We were having beers and discussing how we keep getting warning article after warning article but nothing ever happens. Something commonly discussed here. We are tired of the warnings; we are tired of prepping for something that will never come; we are starting to not believe that there will be a collapse. At this point the brother of my friends comes in. He had been a former employee of mine during a construction project five years ago. During that there had been a conflict whereas he thought he was owed more for his efforts than we had paid him (bonus pay). Over the years it had seemed this rift had healed. He joined the conversation and then boldly stated, “if there is a day like you guys describe then I’ll just hit the road and take whatever the f*** I want. I’ll finally get to get back all that the rich f***s like you have taken from me! F*** you rich bastards! You guys have only gotten ahead because of the sweat from people like me! The day you describe when payback will finally be here!” We just sat there stunned! I had never considered myself rich. I had started my business with maxing out one credit card, buying used salvage equip and rehabbing it, and sold off all my furniture to buy opening inventory. I worked over 80 hours a week for the first several years while working another full time job. For all of the risk, hard work, and sacrifice for 10 years we make a nice comfortable living; my friends I was visiting had worked equally hard towards becoming a professor. All this time my friends brother was partying, in and out of jail, playing, playing, playing but now as he has nothing and we are comfortable there is an incredible anger and rage within him! Behold the birth of a MZB! I don’t know why but that moment brought together a flood of memories over the past few years of isolated events that I put no thought into. Working in the garden while a pickup truck of loud and obviously drunk guys driving by along the irrigation ditch road, as I looked up they flipped us off yelling obscenities; being threatened by employees that were being fired; being flipped off and cussed at by the low rider crowd (Bienvendos a Nuevo Mexico). All of a sudden what I thought were isolated incidents of angry individuals not to be taken seriously transformed into everything I thought that MZBs could never be. The day is coming when the collapse does occur and that day will represent freedom by all those who have not prepared and those who have not been fortunate to make it. That day will represent the day that they can begin exchanging their anger for all the pieces we prepared ones have carefully put away safe and sound. There will be no begging for help by those angry hordes; we will be the ones begging for mercy as we give up all we worked so hard for and thoughtfully put away. These people who you see now at the bar at 5, those people you see wasting their few dollars on the bread and circus shows like Nascar races, football games, strip clubs, malls; those people that have invested more money into their vehicles than their vehicles are worth with stereos, chromed rims, oversized exhausts, etc.; it is these people that are the ones who we will be fearing. They have been undergoing a professional training in instant gratification and the day of collapse will be the moment when the supermall of mass instant gratification opens its doors: That supermall will be the homes of the prepared. Are you ready for that day? I know I’m not. I have plenty of supplies, firearms and ammo, water, fuel, you name it but I am not ready to defend it from masses of the angry hordes staking claims on all we have worked for. The day I saw the rage in my friends face I realized I wasn’t ready. I had considered needing to defend myself from some abstract threat as foreign and vague as the term MutantZombieBiker; I hadn’t considered needing to defend myself from what I bet is 85% of the mass population. What happens when collapse comes and total anarchy let’s go and you are one out of 10 families who is prepared and able to be comfortable. My 6+months of food, water, fuel, ammo will be taken by force and I will only be hoping that my family isn’t brutalized. Take a piece of paper; make a grid of 3 dots by 3 dots. The dot in the center is you; the dots surrounding you are your unprepared neighbors who have always waved hello but who now realize you have what they need and are pissed off that you unfairly sacrificed your wages and effort to be prepared while they partied and played. You will not hold these people off at bay whether you are surrounded by 10 acres or are smack in the middle of suburbia. The only way you stand a chance is to begin converting those surrounding dots into equally prepared families who will stand strong with you. The problem is that each one of those families will have friends or families who will ultimately not have any preps and will come to claim their share and consequently part of your stores. In the past year I have moved from NM to a smaller CO town. I was on the verge of making a decision on buying a property. One is 40 acres right on the edge of town but with a running water source and good farmable land. The other is 5 acres and a nice house with greenhouses shops, a creek, and several outbuildings where a doomer could survive so easily but is right in town. The third is 40 acres on the backside of a mountain overlooking town and has no running water, is completely undeveloped, 4wd access, and surrounded by eight other 40 acre parcels. One realization I had, is that those unprepared masses , are inherently lazy; they are unprepared because they refused to put in the extra effort to become prepared. It is the ant vs. grasshopper fable in the classic sense except the grasshopper will be armed and will outnumber the ant 1:10. By being on either of the first two locations I will be easily accessible by all but the absolute laziest ones. The running water on those two properties will also attract people. I have decided on the remote 40 acres (:30 4wd drive but only a :15 mt bike ride from town). It will be a lot harder to make an ideal doomstead but there won’t be any running water for people to follow, it will take a lot of physical effort, my preps will be hidden and the surrounding 40 acres properties are owned by similar doomer folks. Let the MZBs come because the advantage will be belonged to me. It is impractical to live there full time with kids in school and businesses to run but as part of the plan we will live in a plain, old small, non-fancy, house in town; I realize that by living in a home equal to what I can afford I make myself and family a target. By living in the smallest home we can fit in and having zero preps visible we can let our friends and family wonder why we live so insanely modest. On weekends and days when we have time we stay at the retreat home which will be 100% off grid and will contain everything needed to be self sufficient for a minimum of 6 months. There is an unfathomable amount of anger and bitterness in all of our communities. Other terms thrown out that evening in the conversation were that people who were prepped are “elitists”, “better than others”, “you can only prep if you are a rich f***”, “we [bro & his buddies] can’t wait to show who will be the new boss in town”, “a new sheriff will be in town”; you all get the drift. The Mutant Zombie Bikers are alive and well and I know I have grossly underestimated their threat. Have you? Read the comments, as well, while considering the nature and character of the majority of folks in your AO. To quote Baugh: "Get your head on straight –– these people are not misguided sheep." Do you understand yet? |

Did i blow your mind with all that ![]() The basics of it is that most folks own firearms and some ( gun forum types) will be as big a threat to those who have prepared as the hordes of gang bangers that every post apoc fiction has written about for years and that we all joke about. We need to prepare for any threat , be it man made or natural disaster. Those that do nothing but play the gadget and gear and PM roll of the dice with out having a balanced food storage program in place may really turn into what they protest the most about. |

Good for you for wanting to reprioritize a bit. Don't beat yourself up. We all have a tacticool monster inside of us. But I'm glad you're here and hope you learn what you need. You'd actuallly be surprised at how easy it is to get some of the basics going. Not to stomp on my own thread with a 'here's the basics of prepping' but you might want to check out a couple of The Survival Podcast shows on beginning preps. Great stuff there. |

A couple of thoughts on this.
First off, you'll have no problem spotting the Arfcom MZB's when they come. They'll be wearing MULTICAM!!! Right, Protus? Second, here is an old article from a blogger that I get a kick out of. http://bisonsurvivalblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/post-apoc-bandits.html Lastly, I get a real kick that the MZB term has come to such common use. |

My family has more to fear from MZBs than most. We have about 600 head of tasty beef on the hoof. Once the SHTF long term, we will definitely be giving away or selling many dairy cows to get the herd down to a manageable size. The problem is when we have to say no to giving up more cows. There will be three sources of MZBs to worry about local politicians trying to feed their flock, and local people if the civilian authority completely disintegrates. The third is out of towners looking for food after hiking out of the cities. It is a daunting challenge and I have been putting more and more thought into defending the farm from various forms of MZBs. |

The forum that the article links to discusses the 'community organizer' MZB, id est, the new mayor in town who comes to confiscate your food at gunpoint for redistribution to the masses. Might be more terrifying than the traditional MZB. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Being completely alone in an emergency completely sucks.
The biggest "hole" in my preps is a lack of like-minded friends and relatives with whom to share resources and responsibilities. For this reason I am taking steps to network. Recently I met two SFers for dinner, and I think it's safe to say that we are becoming friends. We certainly share many of the same fears, as well as a shared dedication to family. I think our value systems are very similar. This is important to me. I don't know what the future holds, but I do know that whatever unpleasantness is coming our way will be much easier to face with a group of like-minded people. |

I've met a number of other SFers, but they just about all live in Texas. Locally, I have NO friends or family that share my same interests. My fiance and I would be pretty much alone. That's a big issue that i'm trying to figure out what to do on. |

To be honest Protus I wouldn't know what that pattern looked like if a multicam shirt jumped off the rack and bit me on the ass. My LBV for carbine classes is tan, and all of the pouches attached to it are black. I'm the most mismatched armchair commando in the whole forum My LBV also has "US" in big letters on the shoulder...decidedly not tacticool, but it works. Good article, my aching a$$. Guy hangs out with a professional loser for years, even after being shown he was a loser (complained about not getting pay he wasn't owed, full time partier, etc.), and even invites him into his home to hang out with him.
Then gets on a survival forum to whine, feel sorry for himself, and engage in delusions of grandeur. When he shot off his mouth did they all jump down his throat? No. "We just sat there stunned" They should have all been reaming him out with a wire brush with everything they had, then kicked him out the door and showed him the road, and never come back. They should have all been on their feet and in that guy's face and showing him the door, in no uncertain terms. Get out, you mangy cur, and don't ever come back. Talk and act like a dog and get treated like a dog. But no, we get waah, waah, waah. Technically this has already begun on a region by region scale.
Just within the past 8 or so months that I can recall from memory (I'm sure there has been more incidents during this time). over the summer in Orlando Florida, the lone gun man who went back to his business to kill his boss after being fired 2 YEARS AGO. Shooter blamed them for his current situation in life. Couple months ago in St. Louis, guy takes an AK and pistols into his work, a manufacturing plant and starts blasting people who mistreated him. Shooter also blamed them for his current situation in life. Austin, TX just a couple days ago, normal guy crashes plane into IRS building. I'd bet $100 he blames the IRS for his current disapointing status in life. As the economy continues to effect those who thought they were safe, and their living beyond their means perfect world collapses, they won't be able to deal with it and will become what all of you fear. It potentially will pick up speed if we hit a huge hole in the stock market or unemployment takes off. |

I have been totally alone in my desire to prep. I had not found any one who shares this idea. I have now found (2) families that share this desire. I have been studying very hard for the last 2 years on how to prep and what to prep with. I have found so much information on this site, I am amazed.
I found out two or three months ago that a long time friend has become a prepper too. She said she woke up one morning and said" I need to do something!! " I have known them for 13 years or so. She started asking simple questions. Where to look for food, and supplies. I have shown them what I know. They are coming along very well. I have them on the path to being prepped. I have also started teaching OPSEC!! They do not live in a bad area, yet it is in the city and the bad areas are very close by. I sent them this thread. She has read it, re-read it and was surprised at how people can be. I have talked with her about it. She is not so worried about her direct neighbors, yet she is now more aware of what people will do in time of need. As she learns more about all of this, she becomes more aware of what is around her. Along with this thread, reports of the violence in Hatti, she is becoming more worried about what can happen if it gets real bad. They have pretty much standing orders to get out of town and head to my house if it gets real bad. I live on 6 acres in the boonies and the people around me will help to protect each other. I have included this family in my preps because they are prepping now, so it will add to mine if or when it is needed. They will show up with stuff and not asking for a hand out. We are planning to get a bunch of things from Costco and put them in mylar bags. It helps so much when you can prep with friends. I was not looking forward to bagging all of the stuff by myself. The other family is not so much into the prepping, but she was raised to have food and supplies on hand for the lean times or when the bad times come. They a good head start on being prepared for the rough times. I have included them in my preps because they can do things I can not and do bring supplies with them. They too live in the city. She can do canning, make jelly, jams, and things that I can not, do at this time. Neither know what I have on hand. They do know I have some stuff, but I have not said much about it. The one thing I have talked about is a BOB that will be good for 3 days at the least. I went through a fire out here totally un-prepared and struggled for a week. The roads were closed, store were empty and I lived on rice a roni for a week. It was pretty bad. People lined up for hours to get what they could truck in. I had water but no electricity to run the pump from the well but had a nice holding tank. The one thing I have found is that it makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one who wears a foil hat out here. buzzard |

We would be happy to have her. Her politics do not matter. That she is getting her head straight and preparing to help herself and her family is a big deal. We will help her any way we can. Besides, hanging around with us might help her understand more about why we value Freedom so highly and why we believe what we believe. |

She may. I have tried to get her Hubby to join. I have sent many threads their way.
After about the third discussion we had about prepping, I asked her " why now" She had no answer other then just a feeling. I will see about getting her to join. She is in school, (2) kids, part time job, hubby, and a lot of other things going on. She likes how I break it down into a readers digest format. :) Just good to have some one to prep with. Dru. |

I have always had a disaster locker. I grew up in tornado country and then lived and worked in hurricane country for years. Have had to get by for a while after a couple of both. That locker saved my bacon more times than I can remember in SHTF situations both large and small.
I can understand how your friend is being moved by her "feelings". In the five years my unease has been growing exponentially. In that time I have been expanding my preps to cover longer and longer periods. In my case it is not a feeling, it is watching what is going on in government, the population, and the economy. Your friend is seeing these things as well, she just has not put it all together yet. As things keep sliding, I am surprised that there are not more like her, people becoming aware and uneasy. Keep encouraging her and her SO. It will be good to have more hands on the pumps when the ship starts to go down. I have a couple of friends with families (not extended) and a plan. Going it alone in a SHTF situation is not a good option. We all have to sleep, it's good to have someone to keep watch. I would like to network a little more, but it is hard to find people in the local area. There is also the trust factor. My group includes people who I have known as long as 25 years, and no less than 10 years. It is a start. Keep up the good work. Gentle evangelism with other friends and associates might get them interested in preps as well. I borrow from the LDS concept that anyone who has their own preps are not likely to come after mine. stasiman |

Bruised emotions? The man lost his livelihood. Welcome to the real world, where actions (like getting dicked out of your job) have real consequences. I have a friend. He has what we have named the "Viking Theory" Simply put, people are douchebags because we don't have enough Vikings anymore.
Basically, a lot of the behavior you get out of people on a day to day basis would have, 1000 years ago, resulted in them getting immediately whacked in the face with an axe. No face whacking? Shitty behavior increases. It's simple. I see examples day in and day out of people lying, cheating, stealing, and shafting others in ways they wouldn't dream of if there were the realistic prospect of a face-axe intersection event. |

I have to agree with the the not enough Viking rule.
I deal with people, that if they acted this way 50 years ago, would have been dropped in their tracks. One hundred years ago, it would have been even worse. They think they are privileged in that they are suppose to get what they want and can treat any one like fertilizer. They are to be worshiped. If the times turn bad, I am not sure I could keep from laughing at them as they totally fall into the gutter and cry themselves to death. They are loathed by those around them. Most people would not even try to help if they were in need. It is a shame that they are so worthless. Their only use would be to create carbon dioxide for the trees. They are that full of hot air. That poster needs to grow up and quit hanging around with his loser friends, and in the meantime quit whining about it when he does. I disagree. The big mouthed fool tipped his hand to them. It makes no sense to tip yours back to him to try to out-stupid him, especially when you have more to loose than he. My only comment would be, "Thanks for the warning.",He also needs to be told that there is no honor among thieves so his approach will leave him clocked out by his own kind in short order. ...your friends close, and your enemies closer. |

Make that "lose", not "loose".
If you've ever spent time in an inner city you will meet plenty of people (urchins or MZBs) that have nothing to lose, except their life. You can't leave your toolbox open and walk in the house without this type stealing it while you are inside for a minute. And then they'll blame you for being stupid enough to expose yourself. I knew someone else that left their trunk open and some guy walking down the street started pulling his tools out to steal. The owner walked up and confronted him and got a beat down. For decades kids have been getting shot and stabbed for sneakers, jackets, bikes, pride or even for nothing. It just isn't in the 'burbs where you live yet. This 'new' reality already exists. |

Quoted: I like the catchy name. I've been saying for years that it should be mandatory for everyone to carry sticks around with them. When someone is rude, they must be whacked upside the head with a stick. We would be the best behaved, most orderly people to ever walk the Earth. Its so true, too. The saddest part, is that many of our ARFCOM brethren, the ones with all of the latest tacticool accessories and overwhelming firepower, but only 12 hours worth of food in their fridges, will represent one of our biggest threats. An armed man with hungry kids is scarier than any of those sheeple soccer moms. Yep. That's what worries me. I have posted/said that for years, and at times caught hell for even hinting that one of my fellow "arfcomers" would ever stoop that low. While i know that we are "close knit" SF ( as close as one can get through a cable/dsl/phone line) we are not close enough for me to trust you 100% or enough to be able to say "poster xyz would never do that.." When people are desperate they will do what they need to do to "survive" It is ironic that we are survivalist , and that the key thing to it all is to do what you need to do to stay alive or keep those you love alive. In turn making those that we prepare for or against the same thing we are. Did i blow your mind with all that
The basics of it is that most folks own firearms and some ( gun forum types) will be as big a threat to those who have prepared as the hordes of gang bangers that every post apoc fiction has written about for years and that we all joke about. We need to prepare for any threat , be it man made or natural disaster. Those that do nothing but play the gadget and gear and PM roll of the dice with out having a balanced food storage program in place may really turn into what they protest the most about. Good post! |

I've been giving thought to how I'll protect the livestock that's on my "to get" list. I have no doubt the scads of unprepared will see that cow in my yard and think only "meat", while I look at her and see milk, butter, cheese, fuel, and more cows down the line. Same for the chickens and such. MZBs don't think I'll kill to protect mere chickens, they're in for a grizzly surprise.
It's all about thinking in the future rather than the now. Too many just can't do it. As for the guy who wrote the article, I followed the trail back to the "After the Oil Crash" website where he first posted it and then down the thread. Then I checked out the rest of the forum. Scary place, and puts his (to our eyes) weird response in perfect perspective. Those people think we're the MZBs, and many of them, far from fearing the coming tribulations, are eager, and trying to figure out a way to hasten it so they can take to the streets and hunt down the evil bankers and Teabaggers. Sobering stuff. @ batmanacw, If you see a crazy guy with an AK, a cane and a plume in his hat, don't shoot, that'll be me there to buy one of those dairy cows you'll be getting rid of. |
