Been building out a alternate accessory system with lights
radios and such with duracell rechargeables. Weve replaced all AA and AAA in our house and started purchasing lanterns and lights using these battery systems. The idea being we could extend a generator longer by bringing it up to charge the battery systems only. We tested and we can charge 36 units per 3 hours. @ 1/4 gallon gas and have about 8 amps left over on the generator. NOTE Chose this to avoid systems that outgas exceptionally. Anyone else building any rechargeable systems and what are some of your findings, concerns, gotchas. |

As the above poster mentioned I can't tell if you just use the generator to recharge your duracell rechargables or if you have a larger battery in the middle of the setup. I have a lot of stuff using rechargable batteries, from my laptop and cell phone to my dewalt yellow radio that runs on the batteries that power dewalt tools to energizer rechargable batteries, I have some stuff using rechargables. My generator, good one, is a honda 1k watt unit and an older model so it probably does not supply power as clean as the newer plastic body versions, but I have never compared em to know for sure. I am close to buying a battery similar to an optima type car battery since it does not outgas while charging and can be mounted in any position. The plan is for the generator to charge the bigger battery and also some of the smaller stuff while running and then the big battery can be used to keep the little stuff charged up before I need to run the generator. I don't have everything assembled so I am going to have to play around and see how reality works out. I won't be getting rid of some of my other stuff that I don't have rechargables for and I am not too worried about getting rechargables for everything anytime soon. This is a work in progress and I can easily handle having the grid down for a bit. |
