Quoted: One of the most important preps, and probably the most ignored!! I've put some time this past year and a half into getting myself into better shape, and it's really paid off. When I began, I thought I was in pretty decent shape. But as a warning , If you think you're in "decent shape" go outside and try to run 2 miles, It can be humbling! That's where I was 2 years ago.. 32 years old and I could barely a mile. I realized SHTF I really couldn't MOVE if I had to, so I did something about it. I'm not the most natural or talented athlete, but I can MOVE now. http://img2.pict.com/5a/1d/a8/2525378/0/getattachment.jpg I mostly run outside, but it was fun seeing the miles click by. Just under 8 miles in a hour. Also did 19.5 pullups after the run! I know a few guys on here keep in shape.. just curious what everyone is doing. I do a lot of running because 1) it's cheap and 2) it's effective I also do a lot of body weight exercises like pushups, chin and pullups, situps, etc. coming near that 35 mark, 255lbs, and 4 miles ata round 30 -35minutes...muscles hurt more than anything..cardio was a non issue,,i dont think i busted that 120-130 bpm mark. 2 years ago i wasnt run able to do a mile....i could walk and hump a ruck all day..but could not run to save my ass. So you guys that are big and skinny that wanna use that as an excuse to proclaim your in shape, get your ass running! ![]() you gotta start somewhere. |

Quoted: I recommend EVERYONE take a intro ductory Brazilian Jiu jitsui course. 2nd that as well...i thought running had my cardio up,,rolling with someone takes it to the extreme at times.. BAH.clinch,,gaurd.,,pass,ouch my balls, ouch,,shrimp,TAP my Freaking arm TAP.. ![]() cliff notes of course |

Running is the key! I have always run off and on (more on) through my 20s and early 30s. 3 or 4 miles a day - 3 or 4 days a week. Two years ago (at 32) I ran a marathon (26.2 miles) with my bad ass wife. The thing I learned is that long distance is more mind than matter. Mental strength is what is required. Get yourself to were you can run 6 or 8 miles once in a while (with 3 or 4 the norm) and when SHTF you will be able to push yourself further than you would think.
My $.02 on SHTF fitness. Important disclaimer - If you plan to bugout 26.2 miles on foot. Don't plan on moving around a lot for a few days
Edit for additional info - a great product for anyone who plans to bugout a long distance is "Body Glide". It is a anti-friction product. I used it under my arms, on my inter thighs, and groin. The stuff is amazing. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=86517&catid=137215&aid=337953&aparam=bodyglide_chafing_stick_&CAWELAID=61227007 |

Rule #1: Cardio I have to PT every morning before work. When not sucked into group PT...crossfit FTW. Distance runs are good, but my knees give me problems on long/slow group runs. Going at my own pace is much better. Last timed 5 mile was 34:40. I'd like to get more into swimming, because I am currently very weak there. |

I have been pretty active most of my life but recently decided to get back into 'shape' too. My wife and I try to get outside as much as possible but have bought a myriad of different indoor exercise equipment for bad weather.
6-9 months ago we bought An Incline Trainer at Costco. This is the first indoor machine I use on a regular basis. It has an LCD screen that shows the trail you are hiking and changes the speed / incline to match. Last time I was in Costco they had them for $900. I agree about the marshal arts. We did 2 yrs before we burned out. I was in the best overall shape of my life when I quit. 30 secs in a sparring match is a LONG time.... I have a very high respect for boxers now.

| Crossfit is where it is at. I would highly recommend this to anyone out there looing to get into shape FAST. In my fist year in, I went from %18 body fat to about %11. I only 'lost' about 14-15 lbs but I gained a significant amount of muscle. My mile time went ot just about 6 minutes flat from 7:30 ish. I was not able to do 1 pull up when I walked in the door, I can do 15 or so now. The time when I realized how much my strength had changed was when actually did a bench press work out. I had not done a single bench press in 6 months at the time and I had gained 50 lbs on my BP. I would not have believed it if it didn't happen to me. I lost about 4 inches off my waist and went down in a jacket size. I am 35 yo and have never been in this good of shape in my life, I can no advise people strongly enough to find an affiliate and get going, it's really a lot of fun and it works. |

My main 'thing' is adventure racing. Fun has hell and great training for SHTF.
I'm averaging 15-20 miles a week running, but I'm training up for a 60-100 hour canoe race, so paddling a lot. I also ride (indoor/outdoor/road/mountain) 6-10 hours a week and just started doing Krav Maga last week. The Krav is fun and a hard, intense workout. I lift when my training plans call for it, but I don't enjoy it. If I train 11-15 hours a week and stay away from soda, I drop about 3/4-1 lb per week until I get back down to 148, where I seem to be pretty fast and still strong. 10 lbs to go. When I train for expedition events, then it becomes a career, 30+ hours a week. But that it tough to maintain for long... |

Great thread. I normally run 3 times a week or so, and mix in some pushups/pullups/dips/etc after the run. I normally lift 2-3 days a week. If I am short on time I throw in a crossfit workout, and sometimes I do a crossfit workout before my run if it is a short one (check out www.crossfit.com for the workout of the day). I try to ruck march (while looking civilian) once or twice a month.
I do sprints a few time a month as well. Really fun to integrate shooting into this for a little stress shoot. When I was younger I would try to kill myself for every workout. Now I only do that about once a week or so, just to stay mentally hard. I find that it is often better for me physically to be a little more methodical and controlled and not just go balls to the wall at every single thing. My maxes went up more when I would limit lifting workouts to 45min or so as compared to my 2hour+ marathons in the weight room. Did I mention great thread? |

The wii fit plus has been great for me and my family. I run (island lap) for 11 minutes a day, then step for 3 minutes, then hula hoop for 6 minutes. This gives me a 20 minute aerobic, then I do jack knife situps, then trisep extensions. So in about 30 minutes I get a real good workout. It's fun, and done at home, rain or shine. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_j3G8w6gOoRw/SFfkHPhQxxI/AAAAAAAAAR8/9EBlbWB5Yn0/s320/37179_Wii_Fit_jogging.jpg I consider getting in shape the ultimate prep, and it fits with my ideal of being useful even if the shit doesn't hit the fan. I have been posting about my progress in my thread about "my most important prep". I have been using an elliptical. Running is really out of the question for me.
At 305 lbs., I am pretty descent shape for my weight. I will do 65 mins on the machine today, but running would cause permanent damage and a huge earthquake in california. I cannot handle having the deaths of millions on my head so running is just not going to happen for now!
I don't coast for 65 mins, I work my ass off. Hard as hell. I do about 20 mins of weight lifting before the main workout. My heart rate is still getting up into the 170 bpm range. Not because I am that out of shape, but because I am working that hard. I don't even start to sweat until after 5 mins of hard pushing. Getting into shape is a really big deal. |

The only way to lose LBS is to diet. I am not a little skinny guy. When I ran a marathon 2 years ago I was 6'5'' 235 LBS. Even running 50 miles a week (five days of running - avg 10 miles a day) I did not lose any weight. This was because of my eating habits. The day for a 15 mile run I would load up on the food to make sure I had energy for the long run.
Last year was the first time in my life that I ate right. Not what I ate, but the right size meals. That, with running only 4 miles a day 4 days a week, I dropped to 215 LBS in 4 months. But.... after an injury that kept me from running for 9 months and reverting back to my old eating habits I am back to 230 LBS If anyone wants to cut weight off of their bugout gear their own fat is a great place to start. If you could do something that dropped your BOB weight by 20 LBS you would in a minute - right. |

When you run on the WII, do you have to run in place? |

Crossed the 40-year threshold, was 241 pounds and BP got up to 190/100. After getting on meds, I started dieting, watching the sodium and exercising. I've really kicked it up in the last few months by running/walking 4 miles twice a week and strength traning 3 times a week. Weight is down to 215, BP down to 120/75 and my endurance and stamina are waaay up.
We talk about prepping not just as a thing you do but as a lifestyle of reinforced habit. Fitness is the same way: you won't see lasting improvement without adopting consistent exercise and diet habits. Now I actually feel guilty if I miss a workout or run. |

More is needed.
