Okay so I got the green light tobget some preps at the local gun show this week but I honestly can't think of anything that I can't get at Wally world or other normal store here.
What am I missing? There has to be something. |

Depends on the show.
+1 on hexamine. It is tough to come by mail order at anything approaching a reasonable price but is often available at gun shows at pretty decent prices. Sometimes you can get milsurp ammo cans and other stuff at decent prices. Sometimes I see some decent looking backpacks and other similar gear made by unknown companies (often the seller himself), but the stuff looks well made. Knives are common but it is tough to sort through the junk and find the decent stuff. But you can often find some really good $10 knives at gun shows. |

First aid stuff ,unopened bandages ,sutures, you can get those really cheap, sometimes the MRE's like the other guys said, here where I am at I have not seen to many full cases, but a lot of single ones, another thing I look for is some guys will sell the left overs out of a MRE like the coffee juice desert, you can stock up on powdered drinks for a few dollars, even a magnieusm fire started with flint for 2 bucks, those work real good, para cord, and of course ammo cans for storing stuff can be bought for real cheap, another cheap item I found are the CR123 batteries, way cheaper then any retail store. |

There's usually someone there with a pallet of ammo cans.
When you consider shipping costs, it's sometimes just as easy to pick them up at the show. Ammo can sellers will usually discount a little for a quantity, like if you buy "6 packs" of them. edit: dang, didn't see the ammo cans mentioned in the post above. doh. |

No rust inside. A few minor rust spots on the outside. I wish I had bought more than five. I am hoping they will be back for the show in Feb. Maybe the parts dealer will be back too. Lots of surplus GI gun parts. |

Do they still allow gun shows in Ill? lol Yes. The last show I went to had mostly guns, ammo, knives, and accessories. Sadly, no beef jerky at all. I was really looking forward to the guy with the homemade beef jerky. There is another one coming up in Feb. Maybe he will be at that one. |

Looks like hexamine and first aid stuff is the main things I'm looking for so far. I've filled up 80% of all my repainted ammo cans and don't see my getting enough ammo to fill new ones up anytime soon.
Since I'm drawing such a blank I plan to shop off suggestions on this post so far and what little things I see when walking around. - Hexamine tablets - Hexamine grill - First Aid items that don't come in already made bags. - Medical Bag to hold all first aid stuff (instead of stuffing drawers it makes it easy to pick up and go with the gear. |

Sometimes there is a person selling books. They have a lot of BS stuff but there is also survival oriented books and technical manuals available that could be handy to have in print instead of digital (pdf). Now that is an excellent idea. I hate reading alot of my survival books via pdf and audio variants don't help much either. |

If nothing else, I like to use gun shows to do some hands on examinations of products that I have been interested in. I may not buy them at the gun show due to price, but it does give me a chance to handle different gun items I have been looking at in catalogs (or on line).
A good way to prep for a gun show is go through the catalogs and look at things that are on your "wish list" (a Magpul M-4 type stock for instance). Keep an eye out for someone selling those items so that you can really give them a close inspection. If you know the price of the item in the catalog, and always include shipping, you may have a bargain in your hands. Or you may end up removing the item from your wish list after close inspection. Inspecting wish list items at gun shows has saved me some serious money because the items turned out to be less than expected or not quite right for the application I had in mind. The flip side is that I have often found products that I never intended on buying but bought because of my exposure to them at a gun show. It is a very thin line I walk some times! stasiman |

Just for those who helped me out. I ended up getting more than I wanted but am still happy.
- 12 boxes of large hexamine tabs. I think 3-4 bars in a box. - Romanain WASR 10 AK-47 (All that getting a 'feel' of stuff you may want got the better of me) - 500 rnds of Silver Bear 7.62x39 - 500 rnds of Brown Bear 7.62x39 - 100 rnds of Winchester 12g 00 Shells All the MRE stuff was crap. The only first aid stuff was a blanket. No luck on wool blankets. The few books I found weren't really of any interest. |

Gun shows can be hit or miss. Ask around if there is a "big" gun show in your state. I know in MI there is one show a year that is very large compared to the local shows. It is a bit of a drive but from what I hear there is just about anything available there.
Nice purchases though. Where are the pics of your new weapon?

Well they aint what they used to be, but if nothing else you get to walk around and say.....Dear God , they let that guy own a gun ??......... ![]() I'm all for people have the right to own arms but man I sometimes judge books by their covers to often in this case. As an African American, every time I see another guy come in the show having to hold his paints up, mind you with a belt in them, I'm thinking WTF go now.
