The only pwerplant for a serious BOV is a diesel, for a number of reasons-preferably a mechincal injection, no computer diesel.

I agree with you the diesel is the better choice, Thanks to the EPA We cant get the toyota hi-lux or landrover in diesel. While the big three offer some brutes I am leary of buying one because of the horror stories of the cost to repair one if somthing goes wrong. I think hes doing the right thing because of his limited finances focusing on the vehicle he has and can afford......no good having an h1 if you cant sleep at night worrying how you are gonna pay for it.  By the way do you have a brick and mortar store or just web ? just noticed you were in NC too , need some jerry can gaskets and thought id swing in if you were close. Best bet is the GM 6.2./6.5 family. Not the powerhouse that the Ford and Dodge offered, but repairs on the them are far cheaper.

An 80's Blazer, Suburban or pickup with a 6.2 can be had very reasonably- ffar cheaper than a newer F150.

We do have a store, we are just west of Asheville in Clyde NC. Come on up!

Ill take you up on that....but itll be awhile.....All the snow and ice is kicking my behind........Ive been in ashville or boone every day but one since it started. Snow and ice really suck when you are trying to get up a gravel mountain trail to a cell tower on top of a mountain

Here is a thread that I started which has my BOV in the first post.  It would make a great BOV because the motor is a multi fuel.  When gas is a lot cheaper than diesle thats what I run (mabey a 50/50 mix),  It will even run on straight waste motor oil and veggie oil that has been filtered.  I even have the M105A2 1.5 ton trailer to go with it.

... Oh, I have a BOL and a BOV, but I also have the common-sense to stay put until the dust settles. Major arteries around the country will be controlled in the event of true SHTF. Once martial law has been invoked, you will not be allowed to pass if armed

And someone has to be awful confident if they think they will be able to freely and safely negotiate "back roads" to the BOL during the madness - think ambush

It depends on when you decide to scoot...........and what you are scootin from......each situation is different, you need to be able to bail if you have to. a 6 cyl 4x4 f150 beats the hell out of a moped.

Welcome to the SF

Quoted:
Prepare for the most likely first and the least likely last.

So you ask; what is the most likely event?

Quoted:
Start by thinking back over the last 20 years of your life and what emergencies you faced. Things like:

flood
loss of employment
fire
tornado
blizzard
loss of electricity
car died out on the road (happened to me tonight 15 miles out of town - 15 degrees and very windy out)
etc.

these are things that will probably happen again. take steps to deal with those problems first. I bet you will not need a single gun or any ammo to deal with them. once you are well prepared for the things that are almost certainly going to happen, worry about the things that are far less likely.

Current events—ongoing or happened within the last 6 months to SF members:
1 SFer recovering from a week in the hospital
3 SF members that are recovering from job loss.
2 SF members have vehicles disabled by auto crashes over Christmas

History –– has been posted in SF since I found the SF:
homes lost to fire posted here in SF
BOV totaled in head on crash because of drugged driver
5 now 7 or more new little SFers born
2 or more little Sfers on the way—ya’ll better tell us when these kids are delivered.
Visits to the ER due to infection, injury, and insect sting allergy
5 or more hurricanes
Flooding in Cedar Rapids
TJ’s BOVs destroyed by severe weather

I point this out to say that you can have the perfect retreat but be really hurt by a simple accident.  Being a prepper makes dealing with any emergency less troublesome.

Do you have a plan for;
fire?
severe weather?
pregnancy?
job loss?
vehicle loss?

Joe, Welcome to the SF.  Just from looking at your post over on the other site, I want to offer you one tidbit of advice...  Keep a low profile, keep your head down and your mouth closed...  Rubbing things in the face of the masses is just not a good game plan, now or then.  Opsec (operational security) is a term that should be adhered to.  Let no one know what you have, and during SHTF, don't let anyone know that you are doing better than they are.  All of the preps in the world do no good when an angry mob shows up to take all of your food and introduce you to their boots.  That said, its always good to see new faces here!
The amount of knowledge here is staggering.  We literally have people from every aspect of life, industry, whatever.  No matter what the conversation, there is always a subject matter expert.  Two quick examples...  One of our members chickens were being harassed by escaped/wild monkeys and he asked what he should do.  The thread was only a couple of hours old and had a professional monkey hunter posting advice and pictures.  The second example is in regards to flu shots, there were a whole slough of threads a few months back on the pig flu shot, and there two or three members posting that worked inside the manufacturing process of the flu shots in question.  Absolutely amazing if you ask me.

-PATCH5

ETA:  one of the basic rules of this forum is to post pics regarding what you are talking about, or someone will chime in with "This thread is worthless without pics" in some variation of a motivational poster.  So, I think its fair that we call for pictures of your truck man.  (Black out your license plate for the pic BTW).  I'll start by sharing a quick pic of mine.  (This is with the old tires, it now has 285/75 BFG T/A KO's)
2004 Excursion - 6.0L powerstroke diesel
2008 Jayco 30 BHS - seven beds, three forms of heat, a/c, tri power refridge and a metric shit ton of storage space.

For more info, there are additional pictures of my set up and many others in this thread

should i worry that you have professional monkey hunters on this forum?

stick around folks, i gotta million of 'em...   anyway, i'm in san antonio.  i may be attending Zombie Camp, or whatever it's called in a couple of weeks, near houston.  i think i'm waiting to be vetted.  also to see if the wife will come with, or, failing that, let me go...

i'll post pics of my BOV as soon as i figure out how, but prepare to be disappointed.  i'm all over the opsec thing, so there's no way of telling it actually has a used westinghouse nuke off an old Ohio under the hood.

carbed small block chevy wouldnt be bad. Heck they made them from 1955-2002 in production cars and still make them to date. Surely there are more parts to be had for an chevy 350 then any diesel on the road.

Hey Joe I just read through your entire thread on the other forum... I get you concept and I think there are a lot of us that think the same way.  Don't let the sheeple get you down.  That is why they are sheep.  Worry about you and yours.  Be prepared.  I am a former Infantry Paratrooper and am doing what I can to prepare for a similar situation.  I need to get a couple hundred miles to a family farm.. I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado and a 95 Jeep wrangler as well as a 05 KLR650.  I am debating whether or not to build up my Chevy or work on the Jeep so it is more reliable or get a true BOV like a CUCV and build it up... The M/C is in the plan but more in a secondary role for recon or emergency getaway.

I want to get something that will be EMP resistant (I larger threat than most people think) that will run on multi-fuel... IE cooking oil, transmission fluid, ect. I know these are not ideal but many diesels will run on these things...

I also understand that you may not need the 4wd but I would not be without it where I am.

Good luck and I will be watching your progress...
