My dear wife endulged me for dinner this evening. I figured being practiced is part of being prep'd.

With that in mind she & I tried an MRE.  I picked up a Steak & Mushroom meal and let her do the preparation.
It took us a minute or two to figure out what to do as this was our first try.  We read over the instructions & were
on our way.

The heater was simple to do, just add a little water.  Rather than use two, one for the steak & another for the southwestern beans I put both pouches in the
same box with one heater in between.  The meal was already at room temperature so I figured one heater would suffice.

Mean while my wife opened the Blackberry jam & cracker and we each had one.
I made the vanilla shake drink and we split that too.

After about 20min the steak & beans were about as warm as they would get.   Not quite piping hot but warm enough to eat.
My wife decided to put hers in the microwave for 20 seconds to get it just a bit hotter.

I divided the steak & mushrooms along with the beans onto our plates & we sat down to eat.

I thought it all tasted pretty good but I didn't care for the little bit of steak sauce I tried.  My wife said the beans were good and the steak and vanilla shake were okay.

We are saving the Tootsie Rolls for later.

I found the shared meal to be filling enough & figure it was a satisfactory addtion to our GHB's.

This was as much about testing our preps as anything.  Eating our first MRE was just a bonus.

Just one additional note.  This meal was from Wornick & is standard issue for our troops.  It says right on the pouch "not for retail sale" but I bought them at a surplus store.  Shhhhhh, don't tell anybody.

Whoa whoa whoa....you do know that some of the shake powders have been recalled for salmonella right? I have 24 meals from 2006 & 07 and some of them fell under the date code for the recall on meals that included a shake powder. Its just the shake powder, the rest of the meal is completly safe, Im sure you can do a google and find the exact specifics. I drank one myself just before the recall came out with no ill effects however. Just a heads up.

At least you tried it, some people never do.

As a side note many find the MRE's unacceptable when eating them at home, really comparing them to the food in the fridge. Eating one that is barely warm in cold weather in the field makes it taste better for some reason
