Teach me about blankets. I know pretty much nothing about what makes a blanket good, bad or otherwise. I'm looking to keep a few blankets around the house, and a few in my truck. Oh and maybe one for my bed Waterproof would be great, and as warm as can be is even better! My buddy has a few woodland camo blankets that are some sort of nylon, about twin bed size, thin but very heavy, and are extremely warm, but I've been unable to find them anywhere. He said he *thinks* he got them from Sportsman's Guide years ago but hasn't seem them since and that they were some sort of surplus blanket (medical he thinks? but isn't sure). I'd love to get a few of those if anyone has any clue what they may be. I'm open to all suggestions.

Go with a wool, maitains its insulation value even when wet. I have a number of old army blankets and they are great. However, they are best used as an outer layer as they are the old school wool that isn't comfortable against the skin...

I never got warm with the Army blankets. But they are good to have. I prefer the pyle. Very warm and light. Better is a good comforter. We have one that will make toast. I love it. WJ

Honestly, I'm not crazy about wool and would love to find a good alternative.

Problem with wool is that it is high maintenance, bugs love that stuff.

As stated above the key to making those rough wool blankets livable is a soft underblanket. I use a nice light, thin fleece blanket under my wool issue blanket. Keeps me comfy and warm

USGI wool over a poncho liner. Some USGI wool blankets are very rough, others are nice and soft like the lining inside the pockets of a fishtail parka. Either way, the poncho liner adds comfort and is just about as warm as a wool blanket itself. Plus if it gets wet it'll be dry before you turn around.

I have a couple primaloft insulated garments that are very warm. Been thinking of getting a blanket with primaloft.

I got a couple italian wool blanets from SG a few years back, like 9 a piece. Very warm, a little scratchy, no big deal. If you can't deal with a little scratchy, you will be in a world of hurt if you ever really need that blanket.

I have a couple of old army blankets and love them. A soft liner helps if they feel a little rough. The pros for me are that they stay warm even if wet and fire doesn’t damage them as quickly.  The cons are that they can be a little rough on the skin.  My $.02

Thanks for the replies guys, now I think I'm going to end up ordering a few different blankets and see which one I like best. Poncho liner is a good idea!

Look into a synth fleece type blanket.  They'll sweat you out, wring out pretty good when wet (and work pretty good when damp), and are light.

I think the new "snuggie" as seen on tv is hands down one of the most versitile survival blankets on the market.
There should be one in every BOB, and kit out there.
You can wear it while traveling on foot, and have your hands free to carry your weapon.
you can tie sticks, and leaves on it, and just squat down and you will look like a bush, so it is good for concealment.
The posabilitys are only as limited as your imagination.

What are the chances of getting a group buy in multi-cam?

paging protus...paging protus and his tactical woobie pics!

I don't like wool, especially if there is ANY chance you'll get wet.  It's heavy and itchy.

I like synthetic fleece.  If you really want to be cool, you can sew some camo material to the other side and make it reversible.

Tactical Snuggie...hmmmm...seems like a new product idea to me......
