The wife and I are currently planning for a Bug-In weekend that we would like to do soon.  Since we live in an apartment we are limited on some of the things that we can do, but would like to make this semi-realistic.  Some of the things we're planning are:

  • No electricity (lights, A/C, television, etc.)

  • Cooking only on alcohol stove with canned goods

  • Clothes will be washed with homemade laundry detergent using bucket/plunger

  • All drinking water will come from fish pond on apartment property (Katadyn Pocket Microfilter + Bleach)

  • Phone book toilet paper (?)

While I realize that there is no way to prepare for every situation, I would like to be able to make a "trial run" to work out any kinks in equipment, techniques, etc.

I know there are lots of things that I'm leaving out, so any ideas for other activities/training that could be accomplished in an apartment atmosphere would be appreciated.

Doesn't planning kinda defeat the purpose? Hit the breaker and go through the weekend, then make a list of everything you wish you would have had.

One thing that one of the survival writers (Pournelle I think) said that he failed at was proper sanitation. They had NOTHING to use: not even a portapotty.

Get a 5-gallon bucket and slice a hole in the lid, or put a toilet seat on it.
