I was in Walmart the other day to buy some ammo and I saw a Coleman lantern there.  It was a rechargeable one that ran off a single LED.  Had a really neat design and it was pretty bright.

Here's a link

It would make a nice backup lantern for a house.  I'm thinking of buying a couple of them and leaving them plugged in.  Then, when the power goes out, when the generator is not running, they would make a nice backup, non fuel powered light.

Looked pretty handy!

Sumbitch! I was just there last night and looking at the exact same thing and was going to post and see if anyone had used one yet! Thanks!

I really like the idea of solar charged batteries over candles and kerosene lamps. Neither of those are easily replenished and they are a significant fire hazard- to be avoided in a grid down situation. Have been looking for really good alternatives. With the use of low power LED's these kind of lights have alot of potential.....

I was actually looking at this one-

Same concept.....

Having done a little research on the subject I am now looking pretty hard at the Rayovac Sportsman Extreme. It does not have the battery life of the Energizer but appears to be much more ruggedly built. Also, to be fair it only uses 3 batteries vice 4 for the Energizer. In a test I saw on Candlepower it was clearly the brighter light.... They also offer it in a smaller version- 70 Lumens and AA vs. 300 for the large 3 D cell light. Also comes with a lifetime guarantee- for whatever that's worth.

Thoughts?
