100gal water-storage tank has a vented screwtop. IOW, it is not air-tight container, but it is made for storing water. Are there any extra precautions to using a vented water tank? I was thinking of putting a gauze "plug" in the vent to keep more air/particulates out of the tank. Anyone come across this before? |

Tanks obviously need to be vented for gravity feed. (I am assuming it is a gravity tank.) The best thing to use is galvanized mesh to keep bugs out. I wouldn't worry too much about dust or dirt. There is not a lot of airflow through the vent. Bugs and birds are your biggest worry (and the occasional squirrel). Hope that helps. |

Yeah, it's a gravity tank. I was just wondering how to deal with possible dust contamination of the water. The opening of the vent hole is only about a half inch so I don't think I have to worry about birds and squirrels. |

is this for drinking or garden use?
I would use it for garden, but there is (as you know) a lot of maintenance for water for drinking. well some maintenance anyway. for garden use, I would not worry a lot. and save the bottled water for drinking. garden and sanitary uses most of your water supplies anyway. |

Drinking water. Treated with appropriate bleach, replaced every six months. |
