How many of you have stored soft water? Is it safe to drink soft water?  I am about to fill some barrels and I realize that I have soft water.

someone who is more experienced than me will probably chime in, but it should be fine. I have soft water and I drink it all the time. It is defiantly ok to drink just don't know if it is ok for storage. A lot of people think that it filters through the salt but really it filters through resin, the salt just cleans all the heavy metals out of the resin.

Thanks for the reply.  Does soft water contain more (or any) salt than hard water?

Not to my knowledge. I did a lot of research when I was looking to install my water softener and everything I read is it is regular water it just does not carry the heavy metals and minerals that leave a residue behind. So I would not be worried about an excess of salt I would just look into what exactly it removes mineral wise, just to make sure you are getting the proper minerals you need in the water.

Hard water is a measurement of the calcium carbonate (limestone) disolved in the water, I believe.

Naturally soft water is OK, only downside is soft water has more of tendancy to disolve heavy metals (ie lead) it comes into contact with.  Probally not an issue for you, and certainly not an issue short term.

Softened water (hard water run through a water softener) is high in sodium, but again, shouldn't be a problem short term
