Have completely stopped watching the news and get most of your news off the web?
That shit in Iran is really gotten me nervous. buuuuut, even O'riley has gotten on my nerves lately. Last night he spent a significan part of his broadcast on the Calvin Clein billboard and topless greek statues in peoples yards. Give me a break. But seriously, how many of us are just prepping and biding our time until it snaps? As far as Iran goes, part of me (a small part) hopes they implode on each other and shut down the strait. Oil prices would go up exponentially and I could go back to work. (Oilfield Rental Company) But, thats a small part of me. |
|
I only watch the local news to catch the weather.
Ideally, the plan is that if TSHTF, we can continue our lives semi-"normally" - seamlessly transition from one to the other with as little drama as possible. It's not really biding our time, just being ready for anything. ETA: You know, I was very surprised to see the uprising in Iran. The protesters are literally placing their lives on the line in the pursuit of denouncing corruption, hundreds of thousands of them. I wish Americans would get off their asses and protest it here. If Iran could cast down the religious zealots who run the country, we could actually have an ally in Iran. They could actually become a peaceful, unifying force in the Middle East. The actions of the Iranians show we have a commonality - hatred of corruption. I dunno, just some thoughts. |

I can barely stand to watch any television anymore. For some reason I expect it to be like it was in the 1960's when there were brief commercial interruptions. Now the commercials are briefly interrupted by programming.
My wife likes to watch FOX news, but I get sick of the style of their presentation real fast, a bunch of ill-mannered ego-heads rudely interrupting each other instead of thoughtful, factual, civil and informative. Yet, if I am going to try to get the low down on what is going on, it is usually FOX that has at least partial credibility in my opinion. These days I gather the most important facts off the net in about three minutes or less, and just do my best to hold down my small corner of the world, and let go of things outside of my control. TV sucks. I do make an exception for the Superbowl or watching cartoon network with grandkids. |
|
We've gone five years now with no broadcast TV. There is only one 20" TV in the house and the only thing it is hooked to is the DVD player.
I think the kids are better off without it, and personally I don't have much time for it. I get my news from local conservative radio, and the internet. |
|
I guess I'm worse than I have been in my entire life about gathering as much news as I can.
The papers are all downsized now to nothing original comes out of them and its all AP which has an agenda. They're so cut back now, in most areas, they're totally out of touch with their readership. The broadcast media could care less about their viewing audience and is totally dedicated to their idea of social engineering. Everything on the web is slanted one way or the other. To get the real picture one really has to read a pro and con these days. That means you have to try to take it all in which can be downright brain numbing. God how I miss the days of read the newspaper over breakfast and that's all a man needs. I'm so sick of being told how I should think. Tj |
We get most of our news off of the interwebs, I haven't watched any of the "mainstream" media outlets in years. Usually only watch Fox if anything big is happening, I think the last time was the Tea Party coverage. The Glenn Beck show gets DVR'd since I usually don't get home in time. The wife blogs alot and is pretty politically active, and I usually check Arfcom and Drudge when I get home after I spend time with my sons and wife, If something I'm interested in is going on, I can usually link off of there or start pulling up some other sites. We watch our local news at 11pm , mainly to see how wrong they will get the weather the next day and to make fun of their over-the-top reporting on minor stories, they make trailer fires seem like 9/11 coverage .

We canceled the cable and have had only dvd's hooked up to the tv's for two years now. This is by far THE BEST thing I have done for my family's collective mental health...
My 11 and 7 year old play outside and the wife and I do other things..don't miss it a bit... |
|
I followed the 'news' 2-4 hrs every day for years until:
I took a pistol class at Front Sight in early April. I was so busy with the class I didn't have time to watch TV for 6 days. When I got home I realized I was a MUCH happier man not knowing all the crap going on in the world. I went on a 'news blackout' and have not seen or read the news since. Now my only source for 'news' is this forum. I think anything I really need to know will come up here. I'm buggin in no matter what. |
|
I tend to avoid TV most of the time and sneer at "mainstream" news though, on occasion, I'll watch Fox News for any breaking event. However, I make myself watch the locals now and then because, like it or not, this is what shapes the minds of your neighbors. Things you enjoy or are proud of may have been spun into something dangerous and hateful - knowing this will help you approach others and influence them. Things that you thnk are utter bullshit to be ignored or opposed may be getting touted as the "big thing that will save us" and you may have an opportunity to "unspin" the story for those around you.
Gotta know what they're thinking and saying, even if it makes you want to hurl. |
|
Well now that ABC will be anchored from the white house, I will only watch them, as I want to hear the crap straight from the horses arse, er mouth.
Not really. I usually just listen to local news every now and then, while getting my news from here, drudge and abovetopsecret, and the links posted with the issues. StagPower |

It's been great! I read some news, but I find it's all just a gloosy sham and I'm not really hearing anything. What I do hear I don't belive, only because EVERY time I've been personally associated with a story the press has gotten it completely wrong. I do lots of head-shaking, lol. |

I haven't watched any network anything in years. I scour financial news on the web pretty heavily though. As far as biding time until it snaps.... I've decided to just live my life without too much regard to the rest of the world. I just really don't give a shit. |

As for Iran, I ive 2km from the Iranian border, I hope, whatever happens, stays inteneral. |

I stil tune into the local news for weather, but only when it's storm season (like right now). But I began tuning most of it out several years back. I do miss the old paper and in general, the time when you could trust the media - last year's major bias and the continuing (criminal) lovefest really turned me against most outlets.
I get the bulk of my news from the internet - I have a homepage that presents hot news from multiple sources, and from there I'll dig if need be, more and more I too am becoming a bearer of the "who gives a damn" attitude - I'm prepared for the most part and could care less about the crap they are spewing. |
|
Mixed for me... I get financial news from TV, my business is global, and I need to know what's going on in the mind of sheeple watching this stuff...it is very helpful in adapting to change.
However, all local news comes from the online version of our local paper, or from the radio. We don't have broadcast tv in our home at all. The rest of TV watching is purely entertainment, my wife is a bit of a TV junkie, so the flat panel is on pretty much all the time...but no news. The rest of my news, weather, editorial reading, etc. comes from the internet. |

i never watch the news. i only watch discovery, the history channel, scifi, TLC, military channel and maybe a few other movie channels. i usually only watch other channels during football season Man, I thought I was the only one. My extended family makes fun of me for being so "off the grid" when it comes to news. I haven't been able to watch the news in about eight or nine years. Seriously. That crap used to literally keep me up at night. History Channel, Military Channel, HBO, DVDs, etc. Good times. |
|
I still watch the tube. But I'm selective which ones I watch. Many of the reality shows –– crap! News, well we all know most of the time when it comes to politics it's leans to the marxist left. I do tune in for local area news, history shows, documentary, movies, etc. I do read the news on the web to give me a different prospective. Read comments from guys like you |

TV SUCKS, mostly.
Western channel, and some others I miss, buy we pulled the plug a year ago. Sort of difficult at first but adjusted OK. When I see it now, it usually makes me want to barf. What a wasteland and something to screw up your mind... We appreciate the reclaimed time a LOT. |
| The change to digital TV was a blessing in disguise since by not upgrading I got rid of one more source of annoyance. I surf FoxNews.com and Drudge for news - weather.com for weather, etc. My wife and I pay about $29 a month for cable internet - that's all we need plus our cell phones for communication. |
|
I relocated and kept my preps.
Well, i saved $$ by not getting cable TV... it is worthless to me with the web. I listen to the radio and thats it other than the web at work. Life is soo much better than before(with all the useless info that they cover to hide the real news) This way I only get the facts that are on the web. even though the web is full of all kind of BS. |
|
I only watch the discovery channel sometimes, mil channel most of the time and PBS. maybe 1-twice a week if im lucky.
I just got this thing called a DVR- I dont know how i lived without it. No more commercials and i have a list of what I want to see. If the wife watches the news-I leave the room |
|
We have cable Internet, but no cable tv. We like our DVDs so the tv is in the house still, but broadcast tv is so full of bs we hardly watch it. The only thing that is ever on the boob tube that gets any attention is Court TV, but it's been about 8 months since that was on (wife's guilty pleasure).
We get free news papers at the U, but they are all about a week out of date (compared to what's on the Internet news). |

i have not watched the local news or any news in 5 years. if something big happens, like 911 i will turn it on. i get all that interests me as far as news goes from ARFCOM. then if i am interested enough, i will search that issue. heck, i dont really watch TV... just Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch and every so often, Ice Road Truckers or Swamp loggers type programs. |

I would turn off the DTV if not for the wife. I hate TV now. |

I used to flip the TV in my office on whenever I was online. After 15-30 minutes, I'd turn the sound down so I couldn't even hear it, they just repeat the news every few minutes anyway.
Then they switched over to digital. To get TV anymore, I have to turn on a powered antenna, then the digital decoder box, then flip the inputs on my VCR which defaults on power on to a different input. In the three weeks since the digital change-over, I've had the TV on about three times, all for weather related situations. Fuck them. They shill for the liberals, they repeat themselves every few minutes, they blast ads into my conciousness using sophisticated sound compression algorithms, and they seem to believe news is whatever they say is news. According to them, TV shows on their network are news, and I am supposed to hang breathless while they tell me what happened on a TV show last night. Fuck them, they are done, they committed suicide, and I'll be glad when they go broke and the stations go dark. People who tell me they watch a lot of TV, outside the occasional DVD, usually find barriers in the way when they try to communicate with me. No room in my life, or time to deal with Vidiots. My favorite people to pull the plug on are those who constantly complain about TV "News" personalities. They can't stand this or that commentator, yet they just can't seem to reach out and shut the buckethead off. I'll go up against any Vidiot there is when it comes to staying on plane in the info world. A couple passes per day, of high traffic websights where hundreds of thousands of people feed me headlines and fuller stories inside threads yields WAY better understanding of news that affects me, at both the big picture level, and the granular level too. Televison is dead, by self inflicted injury. |
