I have a SOG SEAL 2000 fixed blade knife. It is a little too big.

What should I replace it with as a survival/general use field knife?

I prefer a blade without serrations, a tang that prevents my hand from slipping down the blade and around $100 or under.

Thanks on opinions.

My standard has been a baby Kabar.  I wouldn't baton one, but for everything else, it has done all that I have asked.

My field knife is a cheapie SS, full tang knife I picked up at the gun show.  Nothing special. Nothing that I won't care to use and abuse.

My daily carry knife is a Ken Onion Kershaw spring assist.

3 or 4 Glocks....

I have a glock field knife. I have beat the shit out of it and it holds up very well. I cracked open ammo cases with it, pried, punched sheet metal and used it as a stake for a tent among other things.

They run 25-29 each before shipping.

I watched a guy's $300 Strider disappear in the sea. If I lost mine I'd just buy another. He'', buy four at once if you have $100 to blow on a knife.

I agree. Like you, I can't see spending $300+ on a fixed-blade knife either.  I had wondered how tough these knives were.

I like the ontario air force knives from any of their lines(freedom fighter, ASEK, standard, specplus).  They take an edge easily and dont cost much, so you wont kick yourself in the ass if you lose it.

Been using Buck knives most my life. Cheap, easy to sharpen, hold edge well. I mostly carry a folding 110 but also have several fixed. Mine are all US made but they do import some now. WJ

I have stayed with Randall for the most part.  I use a #11 for hunting, and a #14 as a survival knife.  The #1 is my main defense knife.

The other knife brand that I really like is RAT, or Randall Adventure Training (nothing at all to do with Randall Made in Orlando)
Here is the RAT 7 (Ontario D2 Steel) and the RAT 3 (Rowan 1095 steel).  I will be getting a RAT 4 very soon.

A few of mine that was waiting for me when I got home from overseas this last time... My new favorite IS the RC5. A few of them do not look this great right now. The Black plain edge RC5 is now permanitly attached to the GHB in the trunk of my car, the green is on my hip when with nature with the green Izula around my neck unless Im asleep. However the BK9 and 7 are both great knifes as well.

My soul brother has arrived!   As has been mentioned, the RATs are probably the best value for the money around. I own a lot of fixed blades and they could probably sell those knives for way more than they're asking and still sell plenty of them. Quality and finish are outstanding. Their website is linked in a previous post and is worth reading over.

My truck knife is a Becker Crewman, which is pictured in spoolup's post at the very bottom on the right. It has great ergonomics and has a nice belly for chopping. In a smaller fixed blade, that's a real advantage as it will do plenty of hard work in a smaller package. Plus, if I had to leave my truck and go, it's blade length is under the 5 1/2" for concealed carry in Texas, so I wouldn't be bothered with the legality of it.

Beckers were my top pick for fixed blades for years, but the company that produced them went out of business a couple of years ago and they're now made by Kabar. That said, there are always Beckers for sale in the EE if you're patient and look hard enough. Anyone who likes Beckers is naturally drawn to RATs for pretty well the sam reasons, i.e. they're tough, sharp knives made for hard use and at a great price. I can't recommend them enough.

Spoolup, nice collection and I'm on the hunt right now for an RC 5.

Edited for Correction: After I looked again, I realized the knife I referred to in spoolup's picture is the Becker Campanion, not the Crewman. I have enough of these knives to know better. Embarrassed, I am.

K-Bar knives hands down.  No other knife has been tested like this one.  No other knife has the world wide recognition and admiration of this knife.  You can get one in a couple of different colors and lengths now.  They come in many different styles now, but the origional one is my favorite.  I do carry a newer forest green one with the kydex sheeth, but the origional leather USMC one will always have a special place in my heart.  It's beat up and worn now, so I retired it and am building a glass case for it.  Not gonna make it look pretty either.  Just the way it is.

Anyway, Cheaperthandirt has them for about $63.  Pretty good price I would say.

How about the SOG Seal Pup Elite?  It's a smaller, better version of what you already own/like.  I stayed away from this blade for a while, thinking it was too 'tactical' for practical use.  It has since proven itself as a great field blade, and I've purchased two more.

Yup, the SOG Seal Pup Elite is nice.

It's AUS 8 steel is better than the AUS 6 the std. Seal Pup uses and is under $100.

I do have them on one of my RC5s, but it was a gift. That being said, I would ALWAYS take a plain blade over a part serrated any day of the week unless you are talking a bread knife.... your results will vary.

I have 2. I have a Gerber Prodigy on my chest rig and on my LBE (which I wear most of the time) I have a EK bowie that I found on the EE for $40. I like the EK because its one piece of steel and its wrapped in 550 cord. Can't get any simpler than that. Oh and its sharp as hell. Carried one in Desert Storm, used for everything and it never let me down. I like the Prodigy because its smaller and handier and I like Gerber's quality. They really stand behind their products too. All the knives I've seen recommended are good quality kit. You can't go wrong with any of them, it's just a matter of how much you're willing to pay. Look on the EE you can find some really good deals.

Swamp Rat Chopweiler for my large knife (with Leatherman Super Tool, sharpening rod, and firestarter in the sheath pouch), Swamp Rat Howling Rat for my all-around, and I keep a RAT-3 in D2 attached to the strap on my BOB for quick access and as backup.  The Chopweiler has a convex edge for heavy work, the Howler has a medium edge for general work, and the RAT-3 has a fine edge for more delicate work.  All are kept SCARY sharp on an Edge-Pro Apex.  Those are my BOB knives.  I also keep a Swamp Rat Howling Rat in my hunting bag along with a RAT-3 on the strap, and again, SCARY sharp!

You guys can go ahead and spend 150 bucks on a knife. I can't. I can get 2 Bucks for under 100 and I have been using them for longer than most have even been alive. They (my Buck 120 and 110)are still going after 45 years and I am sure too old and cripped up to get into a knife fight. That's what the 45 is for, Knife fights. I think I paid the outrageous sum of 12 dollars for my fixed blade. Still will be going long after I'm gone. WJ

Because of some of the replies, I ordered a RAT-5.  I usually use a Randall 7.5" Model 18 around the yard/farm.  I'll try the RAT.  It looks like it's well made and can take a pounding.  About $150 shipped isn't to bad for a good knife.
