In the past my vegetable garden contained cucumbers and tomatos, but this year I swapped out some of the cucumbers for onions.
The onions grow about 7 plants (green shoots) to the starter pot. The lady at the outdoor tent that I got them at said to plop the whole pot worth of plants into one hole in the garden. The pot is about 4 inches in diameter, and the plants are about one inch apart. I don't really see how fat onions will grow that close together. The ID tab in the pot says to space them 6 inches apart, but that could refer to individual plants or whole pots full of plants. Should I separate the indicvidual plants or keep tham together? Will the roots be all tangled together? If so and they should be separated, how do I do it without ripping roots? The soil has been turned, crumbled to 1" clods, mulch added, and Miracle Grow incorporated, down to about 12 inches below the surface. Anything else I need to do to get good onions? |

They aren't regular onions if they can actually be grown in a pot that small. Do you know what kind they're supposed to be?
I give onions 9" spacing between plants. You need a well tilled soil for good onions but other than that they're pretty easy. If your soil is really made up of lots of 1" chunks, they may not like that as its rather coarse. They do like a lot of water. We planted a bunch of "Candy" onions last year and were very happy with their storage properties......used the last one from last year's garden just a few weeks ago. |
