Hey all,
So something I have been wondering about for the past couple of weeks is whether to bug out and get out of town if something were to happen, Im talking a financial collapse or whatever. Here's the deal...I live about 20 miles south of seattle, my parents place (where I would want to get to) is about 120 miles north of me (up by the canadian border) traffic is always horrible in this area and I can't imagine what it would be like if the SHTF but there is no where else I would feel safe but up there. They live out on the water which has fresh clams, oysters, fish and crab right outside the back door so survivng up there I dont think would be a problem. So my question is would it be safer to hold out for a few days and wait for everything to hopefully die down or get out of town ASAP and also map out alternate routes? Thanks!

In a city the size of Seattle if you don't get out early then you would be safer to stay put. I would have a primary plan to stay with the Preps to support that plan. Then have a backup plan to get out. If you are south of Seattle and they are north then I would assume getting out means having to figure out how to get through or around Seattle. That would be a major hurdle with so many people in the area.

My thoughts are that unless one has a good safe BOL that is easy and safe to get to then bugging in is the best option unless staying is more dangerous than the risk of bugging out. Where I live in FL I plan on staying under most circumstances because the routes to get off of the Peninsula are limited and the roads fill up quick with so many people down here. In Hurricane Evacuations here the roads become more dangerous than the storm.

Sail there.

Though the Sound has so many sail and motor boats it might be pretty crowded out there. That said I'd rather take my chance with those people rather than the people traveling by car.

This, you won't know till it happens and may miss the first "window" to haul ass. You need to be prepared to stay put until safe to go.

+1

I would recommend having three plans, (thats what I have).  I recommend a Primary, Alternate, and last but not least "The Third Option"

For most folks, and you in particular I would recommend the Bug-In Option as your primary plan.  Chances are you'll miss the initial warning or their won't be any to get out of dodge, so hunkering down at least initially will be your best option.

The alternate plan for most is your Bug-Out option, this could be by land, or by sea, or a combination of the two.  In your case, if society has collapsed or is close to it, I would recommend going by boat, if you can, its relatively safe, and its easy to stay discreet.

The third option as I call it, is for when everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Your bug in plan is shot or compromised, your bug out plan is no longer viable etc..  This is the option that you have left.  Calling it "one" option isn't exactly true, its your plan (s) for what to do if everything is shot to hell, and I try to include every variable i.e. foods destroyed, weapons gone, family's passed away etc...  Its better to plan now and investigate options as feasible or unfeasable rather than when the fecal matter has hit the fan.

I did talk about this option with my dad. I've done the boat trip from bellingham to seattle several times which I think would be the safest bet, I do have my pilots license and there is an airport nearby to where I could fly up there but I wouldnt be able to haul all of my supplies in the plane. but getting out to the sound where I live I think would be a real problem. My dad keeps his boat at his dock so him coming to get the wife and I is a possible option, depending on what the fuel situation is on the boat.

Depends on what the SHTF is. In Seattle it could be the result of a volcanic eruption with lahars roaring down on your location. Immediate relocation mgiht mean the difference between living and being buried alive. It could be a subduction earthquake with the possible tsunami in which case the shoreline BOL could be a liablity or simply not there when you need it.

I wouldn't bet my future on past bounty.

Just a thought..
