so, I'm thinking about the average ARFCOM member's ammo storage, and of course many of us put desiccant packs in w/the ammo. but what about O2 absorbers? is there any evidence to suggest that adding an O2 absorber is either good or bad for the stored rounds?

i wouldn't think it would hurt anything but i don't know that you would be gaining anything.
but there many here that know a lot more than i do. hopefully they will chime in so we will both know

On general principles, I can't see why adding O2 absorbers would be bad for stored ammo. But I'm also unaware of any studies that show it has any meaningful positive effects.

Maybe other folks can cite actual studies.

What, and suck the oxygen out of your powder?  Then your ammo wouldn't fire!

Seriously though, IMO, there's nothing to be gained by using them.

I seem to remember someone stating that using O2 absorbers and desiccant together doesn't wrok. Stand-by, I'll see what I can find...

I just assumed I didn't have to worry about that because I've been vacuum packing my 5.56 using one of those 'Foodsaver' machines.
I throw in a small silica pack before sealing (just in case).
Then I pack the 28 round 'ammo packs' into an ammo can.
Someone told me that a military ammo can with an intact rubber seal is waterproof. Not 100% sure about that though.

Vacuum packing ammo has a very calming effect on me.
Almost as good as taking a Xanax.
I'm guessing this is one of the only forums on the web where I can admit this without everyone thinking I'm a nut.

EDIT: Almost forgot, I made a point of wearing disposable surgical gloves while I was packing it up. I read something about the
oils in your skin being bad for the ammo. Going to this much effort, I wasn't taking any chances. Besides, you can buy a box
of 100 disposable gloves these days for $4.

I've been tossing around the idea of sealing my ammo just like that for my

BOB/GHB and wondered if it would work. Liked the idea of a waterproof magazine

amount of "single serving" ammo. Any objections to this method, or any problems

I'm overlooking with that approach?

Thats like ammo porn?  .223 covered in vacumm sealed poly??   HOT!

I wouldn't think that most storage methods are airtight (e.g. ammo cans) even though they may be water tight.  If you're sealing them in sexy hot plastic then it may just suck out the remaining O2 and create a better vacume, but ofr general storage, I'd stick with dessicant packs.

I couldnt agree more. very sexy ammo.

I have vacuum envy!!

seriously though, been thinking of buying one of those and doing the same thing.

gotcha!

desiccant = yes
O2 thingies = no

EDIT - I really like the vac-sealed ammo!

Two thoughts:
If any nof you are welders, and have access to some argon, you can shoot a little argon in your ammo can, and along with some dessicant, shut the lid.
The other thought is to take sealing the ammo in the food saver one more step, and load up ten or twenty mags and seal them the same way.
For now, most of my ammo is new, and still in the plastic sleeves it came in, stored in ammo cans and inside the closet in my bedroom. I'm in CA, so the humidity isn't a real issue here, but in order to prepare for an evacuation, I need to be more mobile-ready, I know. When I retreat, I don't want to have to worry about my ammo being safe.
Talk about sick...I bought 1K rounds of Aussi .308 in cloth bando's on strippers. I sat in front of the TV one evening, and with my oil cloth, I wiped down every single round and put it back in the bando's.
