How far out is it? 30?60? 90? days. I don't have a crystal ball and due to an accident as a child I lost the ablity to see the future.

I don't doubt it's comming with collapse of the economy, I think that when congress goes into recees in February they will bug out.

I prepare for the unkown, and everyone here has different definitions of SHTF, but for many, it is happening right now, with lost jobs and other hardships.

Does it matter? Prep like it's tonight and hope it's not in your great-grandkids' lifetime.

If they bug out then we'll take this country over and run it right.

This is the absolute most correct answer you will ever see.

When you start trying to target an exact date, here's what happens;

As your date gets closer, you get more and more frantic about the holes in your preps. Let's face it, the more you prep, the more things you realise you don't have ( and also need).

Once the date passes, and nothing has happened, you look for the next date in the foggy near future, and repeat the cycle, until you get disgusted with the whole thing. ( heh voice of experience here)

Try looking at your prepping as a hobby, with a priority on your budget, as you can afford. It took me a year of doulble purchasing, and adding a little food ehre and there to get where I am now. Also, by ignoring the internet prophets that are declaring that the world is ending in the next 6 months ( been happening on several prep boards for YEARS now), you find that instead of stressing about your preps, you find enjoyment at taking inventory, and identifiying the next priority that you have to divert money towards.

Yup.

And it will probably be VERY different from how you may have imagined it (just like most things in life). So that's why we prepare for as many different things as we can, but stay fluid and dynamic in our ability to deal with things because it will surely demand that.

And finally, don't forget your humanity. There are WORSE things than dying. I see a lot of Arfcommers (especially in GD) who say "F#CK everyone but me and mine". They really don't care if ANYONE survives but them. Frankly, I don't wanna live in a world where those people rule. Survival at the cost of your humanity is not survival. Contrary to how many of us get in the habit of acting in our daily lives, this life really is NOT a competition. We're supposed to help each other. I think that SF does a pretty good job of living that way.

You need to define what you mean by SHTF.

In on form or another, it has happened to hundreds of us on an individual basis.

I can't tell if you are serious about Congress bugging out in February, but, no, that's not going to happen.

I have seen some smart folks in this forum say that SHTF may not be a defineable EVENT.
We may just slowly spiral downward to the point where we look around and say  ,  "Hell,  it's here!!"
I think these folks are wise,  not because they are 100% crystal-ball correct,  but because they force us to look at a SHTF scenario a different way.

It could take 2 or 3 years to hit an economic bottom.  Or maybe this is just another big recession, it peaks this summer 09,  and then take a couple years to get things back to half-way normal.
We will never know in advance.

Conversely, Al Qaida could set-off an NBC at the SuperBowl and the financial markets could go to Defcon 5  [kiss all your money goodbye] on monday morning??

I like to look at it this way:
What would we do if its' tomorrow?  What will we do if it's a week from now?  a month?  next year?

What will we do if it's economic collapse?  or terrorism?  or BirdFlu?    Zombies,  anyone?

The point is not to pick any of them specifically, but consider each, and it's likelihood, and do what you think is right.   I am not prepared for 3 foot tall green spacemen to land tomorrow,  but I am prepared to lose power in a possible snow storm early this coming week.  YMMV

I already had a couple minor SHTf's recently that I had to use my food stores up a bit.

Keep prepping and hope for the best.

I think the urgency of preparedness is higher now that it was last year this time.  The bottom line is, preparedness is a choice in how you live.  More than that, it's a mindset.  Preparations like food, water, and medicine are must have's, but the mindset is most important.  Being able to make do, improvise, and thrive in situations that most people would crumble under is the most important factor.    When?  Who knows.  Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I have no empirical evidence to support my prediction but i feel within the year. I hope i'm wrong.

And that.

Nobody knows. Nobody. It is like a dam that is filling to the top. and it cracks and cracks, but no give.....and then it breaks. Nobody knows when the dam will give. We are creeping to the top, not yet cracking though. 5  years I think. Just get all the guns you want and load up that ammo! Practice too and learn all you can.  Oh, ya and prep!
