I would think a guitar or any other obviously a musical instrument case is more likely to get stolen than something nondescript.

Uh, I am not setting a gun case down while a gun is in it .  My idea of a discreet transport case is just that, transport.  Either locked in my trunk or in my hands.

Exactly it's not about theft preventon as much as it's about not poping up on the radar.

FYI my $20 Walmart Guitar Case can hold up to a SP1/M16A1 clone in it, my 18" shotgun (with shortened stock), or a M4.  Plus it has a pocket to carry magazines or other gear.

another option:
Tennis Racket case (for those of us urban/suburban dwellers):

Larger Tennis racket cases can hold a 14.5"+FS carbine with standard telestocks (M93s and LMTs won't fit).

My wife bought one of those folding camp chairs at Target, I think it was an Eddie Bauer brand. Anyway, it has a heavier nylon case than the cheap ones you can get a Walmart, I've taken the upper receiver off the lower on my Bushmaster and both pieces fit in just fine. Throw in a couple mags and you have a pretty compact and plain looking carry package. Sure it's not a quick way to access the AR, but it may be a good way to carry it amongst the sheeple for a bugout or whatever. It just looks like you are carrying a camp chair.

I have a tennis racket bag too.  14.5" with F/S and CTR stock/rubber pad.  Fully collapsed, it fits nice.  Love it.

It's definitely transport, but its not discreet.  It looks like something valuable and lots of muscial instruments are stolen out of locked cars/trunks...why add the additional risk?  I'd prefer something that doesn't look valuable...that includes tennis racket cases or anything that's recognizable as a particular object that could be pawned by someone who happens to see me carry it.

Just stash it in your boat.  The gun will be lost in the "tragic boating accident" before anyone can spot them anyway

I don't really see much use in this type of case.  As others have stated this does not deter theft as it still looks like an item of value.  At the same time in the case of a SHTF event carrying a tennis bag or guitar case around is going to look more out of place than a simple duffle or backpack.  Also don't think for a second this type of carry is going to fool law enforcement types or get you by some checkpoint.  Imagine a very tense situation and you need to move about in public, do you really think someone will think you have a tennis racket and you are just heading back from the courts?

IMO, just get one of the "discreet" style weapons cases and be done.  You can carry it to the car and back without it looking so much like a rifle case.  At the same time most high quality  firearms cases are much safer and protective of your weapon.

Can I get an AMEN! A few years ago my wife's new Explorer came with two Eddie Bauer branded director's chairs. The carry case is very high quality (better than the chairs themselves, actually). There is plenty of room for a carbine. Stuff a beach towel in the top and it screams "harmless soccer mom".

My trunk gun and case, for when I am of such a mind

It was originally some sort of paintball marker case that I found on clearance for less than $5.00 at Wal-Mart.

Discrete bag use in my mind is so people don't know whats in the bag at a casual glance it'll either be in the trunk in the backseat with a shelter half covering it in the floorboard or in the toolbox it won't be in plain sight in the vehicle left unattended......

Tennis bag if that works for you more power to ya i don't know a single person in my ao that plays the game and you would stand out walking down the road with it like a soar thumb. While it wouldn't be threatening looking it would definitely make people look.

The bat bag isn't bad at all softball is extremely popular in this ao.

The guitar case while if you left it out in the open in a vehicle would be a target (i'm not doing that with any case).......... if my rig breaks down i can throw it on my back / over my shoulder and people wouldn't pay much mind. I'm pretty sure i can get one big enough to hold an fal too
