So, since I'm the type to plan for everything, I've been thinking about relocating overseas, specifically to Latin/South America. Anyone on here done that? I know that FerFal's in Argentina, but I'm looking at some place like Costa Rica, Ecuador, or even Chile. I'm taking some rather intensive language classes right now, hoping to gain some measure of fluency in Spanish, so language won't be a big deal.

What say you, SF?

Costa Rica is nice from what I've heard. I had a prof who went in with a few colleagues and picked up a summer home there. She loved it. They had someone maintaining the grounds for next to nothing while they were't down there. She said it was 3-4 of them that bought the place and her monthly share was less than a jetski.

You have a great idea. It could be the only idea that viable long term.

The only "X factor" is where to go.

If you can keep your money in some account in the Cayman Islands, then that's a plus too. That way, if the new banana republic government run by "El Revolutionary of the month" tries to seize your money, they can't.

You could lose your property like lots of South Americans did during times of political upheaval. I've met several guys whose homes were simply taken. But...these are the risks you'll take.

I say go, go, go.

I've been thinking those thoughts too, but I'd be headed elsewhere...not south.

I have been to around 30 countries and lived in 3- Here is the place to be.

Once youre there, you will be considered a "foreigner" no matter what.

I'd think twice about Costa Rica. They've slowly been aligning themselves with Chavez, at least economically. There's an undercurrent of real-estate nationalization as well. My brother sold his vacation home there last fall..........

Been there, a buddy had a place in Arenal.... nice in peacetime & good economic conditions.. would not be even midway on the list in SHTF.  You'd likely be way better off on a few acres in the rural flatlands of NE, KS, E. CO etc.  Easier to develop a community of like minded folks.

Unless you Hispanic by race, I'd think this a very bad idea from a survival standpoint.

"We rob Gringo's maan.!"

Heck, being an American anywhere in the world is like wearing a target on your back let alone a third world country.  You travel enough, you learn to keep the fact you are to yourself.

Now if your reason's are economic, I considered it when  I was younger, but then I was use to having eyes in the back of my head in those days and didn't mind it as much as now.
