A friend of mine made this video. It's a simple structure but has some good footage of the issues with remote locations. Planning to land there this summer.
AK CABIN |
Great video, and a nice cabin. The work that went into it must have been tough, be a very rewarding experience. I can't imagune the "joys" of an outhouse in the Alaskan winter! I spent some time at Ft Greely, and used the "facilities" (i.e. a pile of rocks) on the glaciers, and it can be done - but not what I would consider "homey". I think I'd get a second solar panle t get a heated toilet seat!

| I don't mean to sound negative, but when it showed the cat on the job site and talked about getting permits, I was expecting something pretty amazing. My shed sits on better footers than the cabin does and probably about as big. Can you say frost heave? Cool job though. |

How much does the soil really freeze/thaw that far north? |

Yes all permafrost country there. Over time there would be adjustments to the leveling but I see Mark used a very simple footing system. The less disturbance to the ground the better. Here is his second little video he just sent out. In AK you will notice much of the construction has a relative small square footage area and they build up like in this 2nd cabin. Reason of course is the heating in minus 50 degree wx.
