OK, so I am prepping long term storage food.
I have bought 10 cases of mountain house and provident pantry. Mostly meats and cheeses. Unfortunately that is all the budget allows right now. So I am trying to supplement the freeze dried with the basics. I have 4 - 5 gallon buckets of rice. One of sugar and one of Salt. I also have 12 cans of rice beans and wheat from LDS. I hate beans. I would eat them if I had no other choice than starve, but I really hate them. I think I have enough rice. What are other good "basics" to supplement my stores that is cheap and plentiful and good to make full meals with the meat and cheese? Thanks for any help. |

I definately would like some recipies. I have no problem if you want to post them on this thread or just shoot me an email. If i could learn to like them it would make for some cheap protein preps. |

I will just post it here for you all! When I asked her what type of beans did they or she used she smiled and said for her whatever was on sale for her family what ever they could get. I have used this recipe twice once with pinto and the other with navy beans both times it came out great. Yes we had cornbread with both of the meals! Now just to tell you all you make this meal to your liking if you like salt add it same goes with spicy or garlic add veggies to it that you like also to fill you up more. These where both made in a crock pot also! Going to try dutch oven later
1lbs beans pick whatever you want soak overnight Water to cover beans add enough so beans are covered a inch over about 6 cups maybe more Now the fun! ADD what you'd like Bouillon cubes beef or chicken 3 min 6 to 7 if you like it salty 1 whole onion chopped up. If you like onion add more I might do this next time. Garlic powdered or fresh chopped really what ever you like! For a min I'd add if fresh half clove if powdered 1 TBS. I like Garlic so I add a lot to mine. Potatoes I added one to mine because it was one of the huge ones you get from Sams club. Chile powder I added about 2 TBS another add more if you like it. 2 TBS I could not taste it at all Bouillon cubes Chipotle add two to start off as they seem to be not to the one cube 1 cup ratio. Two of them made it have a nice kick that even my kids like. Add more if you like spice or red pepper. This is my add on to the recipe not my Mother in-laws. Meat= Well use whatever you'd like. The best I found so far was a cheap can on ham from the dollar store browned it and then cubed it my wife even liked it and only cost me $2.50 for the can(Just did it to try out SHTF food and it worked great). But can use county ham, Ham bone, bacon even Spam. Wheat germ: Because I can sneak it in on my kids I did 2 TBS in beans and cornbread would never know its there. It's good for you also. Add ons I've not used Corn Carrots Okra Stew meat Tomato's Green/red peppers Dry mustered/Ok did the first time I made it. Sugar If you want it more Mexican add more Chile powder and other spices to it Add whatever you like to this dish. Make the food apart of what you like not you like it. I try not adding salt to my meal because me and my family don't like salt but if you do like salt add some to this meal! Please add whatever you want to this I add Worcester to it because I love the stuff and want to add some horseradish to it next time to give it that clear your nose kick to it. Have fun and try different thing at most it costs you $5 but you learn what you like and how to cook it. |

Easy oil and spices. Seal your favorite spices in 1/2 pt or pt mason jars with an oxygen adsorber. If you don't cook, I would suggest: Dehydrated onion and garlic, peppercorns, season salt, itallian seasoning, taco seasonings, rosemary, etc. Crisco is the longest lasting fat, olive oil is far better for you.
I'd add sugar, powered milk, multivitamens, pasta, rolled oats, and some seeds for sprouting. Also at least 50 lbs of salt if you get a grinder, you could store wheat and corns also |
