Just saw the preview this weeks show will be on "common" items and weather they are bullet proof or not.

Might be some fun to watch, and actually possibly a little educational as well as offer some survival related knowledge (what to hide behind etc)

Wonderful!!  Now maybe the average person will understand you can't really hide behind a wooden table with the bad guy shooting an ak47 at you...

or a car door for that matter

Box of truth stuff....

I've always wanted to test (not yet had the chance) to see if a tube sock filled with sand, gravel, marbles, BBs, ball bearings, or pennies would be bullet proof or not.

Of course a vest made of sand, pennies, rocks, or steel balls would weigh 60lbs or more and be ridiculous. But still...

My big Box O Truth question is if I shoot someone through window glass with a 5.56mm, will it make a neat little hole or just shatter the whole pane? I might need to invest in some laminate.

You talking about a car glass window or a building or house window?

If it is laminate it will make a nice whole with a nice spider web but will not fall apart it was made that way so if you got in a car wreck and your head hit your front window your head would not go through the window  saving you from getting your head cut off.

I've shot through a few dozen cars in my time.

So what did you fire at the brake disc?  Is it a full penetration?

Brake rotors are made out of cast iron. They are not that tough really. Plus they are two layers with fins holding them together inside. So depending where the bullet strike was it might not have been very thick. Just my opinion though.YMMV

I would tend to agree, but I would still say that they are pretty thick chunks of iron...

Most of mine total about 1/2-3/4 inches thick, not including the space for the webbing.  I'm pretty certain most rifle rounds will penetrate at least one side, but I'm not too sure about pistol rounds...

From box O truth I’ve learned that big medium speed bullets hold course and penetrate the best. 5.56 and even 7.62 comes apart due to it’s high speed. If I remember correctly a .45 rnd punched through and held course best in windshield shots.

You would be surprised what M193 would go though! And many hi velocity .223/5.56 rounds zing through steel at close range. I have shot many pieces of steel and scrap from work. 3/8ths mild steel will stop M193, and some pieces of high tensile strength steel. But the scrap of  1/4in AR500 I had would not stop M193.

This info is worth what you paid for it

I'm watchin now, and it seems like some useful information. Here's the results as they come in for those who aren't watching.

Standard issue police badge will stop a handgun round (don't know what size), but will leave you one hell of a bruise.

Ipod (4th gen) was not able to stop a shot from an AK-47 (big surprise there)

3 pizzas were able to stop the majority of bird shot from a 12 Ga. They tried again with buck shot, all of them made it through. It ended up taking 13 pizzas to completely stop all 9 buck shot.

A large hunk of fat will "eventually" stop a .45, muscle will not.

In a challenge to develop home brew armor, Jamie managed to stop a glock with a mixture of crushed cans, polypropeline (sp?) fibers, and some cement. He also got a 9mil to bounce off of some of those small bathroom tiles that come in sheets.

I'll update the post with the results as they become known.

I have a target made from 1/2" AR500 steel and it will stop M80 ball, M193, and M855 at 100 yards. I certainly would not want to be behind it though.
