Seeing the soviets seem to be back in action again lets get the ball rolling on some NBC talk.  I honestly have no idea where to begin, and being that I live just north of Dallas I think my chances are pretty slim to say the least unless I have a fallout shelter to stay in.

No one is interested in talking about this?

Potassium Iodate may be something that will end up on someone's list of things to consider.  It is inexpensive.  Stores just about forever.  And will flood the thyroid to prevent absorbing damaging radioactive iodine.  Best place I have found to purchase is at EmergencyResources.com .

This is just one small way to prepare for NBC.  So much more to do/consider/plan.

But maybe it will get the thread going.

Thanks Noah  They are cheap.

We have all probably watched the Day after tomorrow and it paints a very bleak picture.  This is not something to really look forward to, I just want to see if we can generate some good information.

The wind in Dallas doesn't generally blow North so you would have a good chance of being OK even if there were a Nuke event I would think, esp if you are a good ways out (McKinney for instance).

As the other poster mentioned Potassium Iodide can help in a nuke event, and the tablets are fairly cheap online. Duct tape & sheeting to seal off windows, doors & vents will keep particles from coming in the house. If there were fallout in your area mass between you & the outside will help.

As to the BC part - I'll let someone else answer!

I live 10 miles from Westover, don't know if it is still a high priority target or not:

"Westover Field was created by a war-readiness appropriation signed by president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. It became the largest military air facility in the Northeast during the course of World War II. The post-war Berlin Airlift was based in large part at Westover.

It was renamed Westover Air Force Base after that Air Force's creation as a separate service and became instrumental in waging the Cold War. The Eighth Air Force (8 AF) was headquarterd at Westover from 13 June 1955 until 1 January 1975, when it relocated to Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, replacing SAC's Second Air Force (2 AF). On 4 Septmeber 1956, the 99th Bombardment Wing, Heavy (99 BMW) took up residence at Westover, operating the B-52C Stratofortress and KC-135A Stratotanker, and would continue as the host wing at Westover until its deactivation on 31 March 1974.

Hangar and control tower at Westover ARBAs a former Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52 and KC-135 base and former home to Headquarters, 8th Air Force, Westover was one of the Soviet Union's top targets during the Cold War. SAC constructed a secret underground bunker several miles away in Amherst, Massachusetts to support 8 AF and coordinate Westover's operations during a nuclear war. The command post was linked to the main base by buried cables and microwave antennae. U-2 spy plane film used during the Cuban Missile Crisis was also developed at Westover.

Westover was a base of operations for the Air Force during Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and the Cold War. Eight fully-armed nuclear bombers and tankers stood ready in "Christmas Tree" formation at the base's Alert Facility to scramble if a conflict broke out with the Soviet Union.

In 1974, as the last Vietnam War veterans stepped onto Westover's tarmac, the base was turned over to the Air Force Reserve.

Current military operations at Westover Joint Air Reserve Base are centered around its exceptionally long runways. The Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) uses Westover for its largest cargo and bomber planes. It maintains a fleet of sixteen C-5 Galaxy aircraft operated by the 439th Airlift Wing (439 AW), an Air Force Reserve unit that is operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC). In 2003, the Air Force Reserve Command briefly changed the name of Westover Air Reserve Base to that of Westover Joint Air Reserve Base. It has since been renamed to its previous designation of Westover Air Reserve Base as a military installation and is referred to as Westover Air Reserve Base / Metroplitan in DoD and FAA Flight Information Publications (FLIP)."

First off i think that VT is a pretty safe state.  I want to purchase enough isreali gasmasks for my party as well as UN filters.  The tablets mentioned earlier sound like good advice.  Chem suits are a no brainer as well.  If money was no option I would buy a BMP-1.  make sure you have the ability to drink with a gasmask.

I think alot of us are toast when you are talking about 250 kiloton airburst.

I dont know acurate this is, but I am assuming it is.

You might need to rechart burst if you change zoom

I thought I was toast but 500 KT only overpressues by .25 psi for me if it hit carswell

Glad I am heading south if it where to hit

Found stuff  1 psi to break glass

Fallout (If you have an anti contamination suit/gas mask put it on NOW)

How it gets in
Inhalation, Ingestion, through open wound
It can get trapped in eyes so put on shades or goggles if you got em

Cover mouth and nose with damp cloth
Get clear of area / cloud
Wash hands face head with lots of water (tough to do but you get the idea, stream pond, shower) Dont let water get into mouth
Strip and rinse some more
Put on the clothes in your BOB
Put more distance between you and hole

Main thing, dont get it inside your body once there its tough to get rid off it.
Also cover cuts so you dont get contamination in to you that way

Think of it as if it where sand/ dust same things work

Radiation
Time Distance Shielding

Time        Dont stay in the same spot for long = less dose(by moving to low dose area)
Distance   Move away from the stuff   = less dose
Shielding  Let people you dont know / like stand betwwen you and stuff

For they BC stuff, done your NBC suit or
Stay inside taped up windows and hope for the best
I was a repair locker Lead for NBC in Navy
Without suits you have to keep it off you and out of your system or hope its well diluted by the time it hits you

For information use only

Anybody know who sells and install reasonably priced fallout shelters nationwide, or at least in the SouthEast?

Get some old NBC field manuals.

Nuke
Learn to figure optimum time of exit.  This is the time where staying in the shelter is more dangerous than leaving.  It is math heavy and was the toughtest part in the NBC defense course for most people.  Radiation degrades and takes time to penetrate things.  This basically helps you figure how to get the least amount of rads.

BC
Other than pro gear and detection gear know the prevalent winds in your area.  Also, be aware of delivery systems.  Not a whole lot else you can do other than guessing without CDM's

Ia there an online source that has those manuals?
