I have two compasses in my BOB but on a daily basis I would like to have a watch with a built in accurate compass.  Suburban has one but can't attach it to my wrist and it won't fit through doors.....Any reliable fairly decent ones?

I have a SUUNTO Vector and I love it.  Not too expensive for all the functions it has...Costco has em for $129.00 in most stores right now.

Your best bet is either the Casio Pathfinder Solar or the Suunto. FWIW the Suunto might need frequent battery changes if you use the functions alot. The good news is that the batts are easily changed by the owner, no jeweler required.

Suunto Vector since 2004, completely satisfied, on third battery now.

If you have a watch with a min and hour hand, you can use it as a compass

It can be done with a digital watch too.

But, I'm guessing the op might like something more convenient.

I've been looking at that one, but don't know much about it. How do you like it?

Amazon has that watch still labelled Timex for $63.  If you don't mind a rubber strap and the name on the face doesn't matter, it's a deal.

That being said, I have a $5 watch from ***-Mart that I use the sun with to get North.  This does not work at night though.

Thanks for all the replies - I knew about the sun/watch hand method but had forgotten it -- Since I don't always have the hunting fanny/bob on it would be nice to be able to say, " the deer ran south west......or the house is north of where we are, lets get there....I will check out the Timex and Sunto....

I have a Vector too. 3rd battery in it now, and I love it. but I've learned not to trust the compass. It needs to be resynchronized or whatever way to often, and sometimes it says it's done, but checking it against another compass shows that it was not. I would certainly not want to trust my life to it.

maybe mines defective. . . ?? have the rest of you suunto guys traveled much and USED the compass ?

I had one of those Casio Pathfinders a while back.  We were doing a night land nav at Ft. Lewis.  I ended up breaking my issued compass, but finished the course with the Casio, good watch.  I just use the Suunto compass/watch band now.
