Someone else here suggested TrueCrypt (maybe ARjedi?), and that's what I use. It is a free program. I don't know about encrypting an entire drive-- that's probably beyond my abilities and comfort zone. I keep a few encrypted files that TrueCrypt treats as drives. Each one contains multiple individual files I wanted to encrypt-- financial documents, insurance scans, photos of credit and insurance cards, etc. I can easily encrypt my most sensitive information within a file that will fit on a 1GB flash drive.

The program was (for me) a bit counter-intuitive, but that's probably because I'm not much of a computer person. Read the documentation and FAQs, and make sure you understand what you're doing. Also make sure you use a password that you can remember, especially if you'll be creating an encrypted file and then not accessing it for long periods of time.

As mentioned above, TrueCrypt is what you want.

Anything else is too weak/unsupported to be worth your time or too expensive.

Look in the General discussion area, it's near the bottom called "Urban Commandoes".  Good group there.
