Anyone know of a source for really strong entry doors that look like normal residential doors? I'd like one with a steel frame inside the door and a steel jamb.

I like that one for the interior but I don't know how it will look from the front porch.

Any other suggestions for a front door that can resist kicking?

Wow, $3400 for a door.

There must be a less $$ way to secure a door

That is a vault door. It can be had for around $2k if you shop around

I need an exterior door though.

I have an Exterior Steel 'Security Door' outside of my normal door.  It's a steel tube door with a Steel mesh in between the tubes.  It's backed by a Standard Steel door.

I like it  because you can open the front door when the weather is nice & let the air flow, but noone can just 'walk in', either.  It's also nice for late night visitors, you can open the door and talk to them without letting them in.

The downside is that it's two more locks to unlock when you need to let someone in.  Both doors have locks & Deadbolts, and they're always thrown.

Most stick built houses can be hacked/sawzalled into.  Ain't any harder than opening up the house to put in a window or sliding door.  It took two guys with 2 sawzall's less than 15 minutes to cut a hole in my house to install my sliding door.  The hole was about 6x7 feet.  Definitely big enough to back a pickup truck to load it up.

My house will be built out of filled blocks.  It will take a while to saw into it.

I had this same problem though I was not as concerned about aesthetics and came up with a good solution. I had a door to the outside in my bedroom...it was an old wooden door with large panes of glass. I hated that damn thing, made me very uneasy, opened into the back yard.....I priced metal doors...anything worth having was $500-600. That's a pretty good chunk of change.

Anyway I have a friend in the demolition business. I told him that the next time he knocked down a convenience store in the Ghetto I wanted the alley door-steel, built hell for stout etc.........About 3 months went by and I got a call one day-"Got a door for ya, meet me at the corner of x and y in 30 minutes....BRING YOUR PICKUP".....

I go hotfooting it over there thinking...there isn't anything ON that corner what the heck does he want.....When I get there I find that he's demolishing a friggen ATM building!  The safe and money machine had been removed of course BUT the back door and frame were still there. He did some very beautiful chisel work with the Bobcat and then loaded the thing- frame and all into the back of my truck. Cost me a case of beer. I took it to a locksmith buddy of mine....First thing he says is "Where the hell did you get that?" Says the lock alone is over $250 his cost......

Only way anyone is coming through that bedroom door now is with an F150 leading the way! I sleep alot better now.

Why not just use some brackets and a wood plank mounted on the back? Wont look pretty, but will withstand the kicking.

Have defeated many a steel door in apartment buildings.  Hardened door is usually on a stick built wall.
Easy to go through the drywall or on an outside door most are wood, particle board and siding.
Very easy to defeat.  If you are upgrading the door might want to put some chicken wire in the wall around the door.

At least you will slow them down.  But think about this.  Keeping bad guys out usually means keeping family in
in an emergency.  Have a solid EVAC plan in place.  Sucks to be the guy dragging dead bodies out of house fires.

My primary goal is to keep out druggie thieves who think home invasions are cool.  Regular doors are a joke and can't keep out a 14 yr old.

The walls will be grout filled block for thermal mass. Nobody is coming through the walls with hand tools.

The windows will be casement so they can be broken in an emergency. Most thieves don't break casement windows to get in.  Besides, if I hear them kicking at the door I'll be ready and waiting if they try a window.

IF you go to a full service lumber yard, you can special order a fiberglass door so that it swings out.

Replace all hinge and latch screws with 2.5" deck screws.

Problem is a swift kick and it will fly apart if there's not enough steel.  Even the outswinging dorr will come apart if the jamb holds.

you can have a fort knox front door.

do you have a sliding glass back door or glass windows?

yes you can have bars on your windows and a gate on your back glass door.

most theives go in through glass. smart home invaders let you open the door for them with some kind of CON job.

alarm system should be in every homes self defense system.

Most home invaders just kick in the door at 3 am. It is not that easy to break into a double pane casement window

Yep.  And if it takes 3 or 4 kicks and they don't think they are getting somewhere, they most likely will move on.  If it looks stout, they might not bother in the first place.

My point!  I also plan to have an outer pasture with goats or longhorns for an additional intimidation factor. Dogs would be best but I don't want to feed them.

I've been wanting to do something like this on my front door.  Do you know the brand/type of door it is?
