| what would be better for EOW radio communication 40ch CB/SSB, 2 meter or 10 meter ham? |
why single out certain bands? there are many relatively inexpensive and relatively portable ham radios that cover the entirety of 160m -> 70cm; the Icom IC-706MkIIG and the Yaesu FT-857 come to mind. also see ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=22&t=604477 ar-jedi |
all ham radios operate from 12Vdc power.

Being an operator of many different radios....I still like my good ole trusty, AM/SSB CB Radio With everything I have at my disposal, I talk on my CB's every day, and found it invaluable while in NOLA during the hours and days just after Katrina. No phone sevvice (cell or landline) unfamiliar with the area, and how to get around. I was able to keep in contact with the other 6 trucks in my group (telecom repair) and talk to the people who knew which roads were open and where the roadblocks were. Something as simple as driving to a destination with 7 trucks, was a pain in the a** when you could not communicate your intentions on the fly. we soon equipped the other 6 with radios, and it became much easier to travel, without having to stop and discuss routes and such. HAM radio is also an option, IF, the rest of your party, or the people you need to talk to get thier ticket. I have both available, so I'm good comms wise, but I would start out with a good AM/SSB CB radio, and a great antenna like a Wilson 5000 or 1000, then go from there. |

I don't see ruling them all out. I have cb stuff I am working on right now. I need to finish installing a cb in my jeep and I have 2 handheld cb radios already. I also have a lot of friends who have an old cb in the garage or barn or attic and if they had to they could get them out and hook them up. But as soon as I finish the cb setup the ham setup is getting finalized and I am taking my test while figuring out what setup I think works for my needs. A lot of folks I know who are lower tech folks just don't touch ham at all. Many of them don't bother with military mag fed semi autos either. Many of them stick to older used vehicles. While some have computers many of them do not have computers. So for a group of folks I know, cb makes a lot of sense. But for other groups, ham makes a lot of sense. I understand not being able to do both or all 3 depending on how you break it down. But I personally know I lose a lot if I tried to rule anything out. |
There are radio communications options besides the three choices listed, none of which are particularly suitable for "EOW radio communication". I guess it depends on who you want to communicate with during/after "EOW". |
care to elaborate? i know there are a lot of different types of comms, but what do you like and why? i've only begun searching comms and all info is appreciated. |
