I usually have a few gas cans sitting in an open shed behind the house.With the price of gas I'm thinking there's going to be some people start looking for easy to steal gas.Besides a chain what are the rest of you doing?

Bouncing Betty's and claymores. Bear traps and lots of bullets.
Or just run a chain through the jerry can handles and lock them all together. Leave a few loose cans with paint thinner and water in them. They likely wont rob you more than once.

cover them with a trashy tarp, or dig a hole, cover them with plywood and a trashy tarp / camouflage.

Ahhhh dude, mercury switch wired to a flashbulb inside the can of gas. Leave it out and write "please steal me" on it. LMAO
