I have one of those 15 gallon wheeled gas tank/pumps, which I've used for hurricane storage for extra fuel.  My concern is I store it in my garage-and ultimate safety of the thing.

It has a sealed gas cap, and screw type vent, so last season I stored it (away from water heater and eletrical sources), and as I walked out of my open garage, would allow it to vent it's vapors outside (every few days) and then reseal it.

I *think* this is better then letting it vent and accumulate 24/7 in my garage, and just wanted to hear what you guys thought about it, or if there were any other precautions I should be aware of.

FWIW, storing it outside is not an option, and I don't have a locking thread.

Thanks

The nose knows.  Its your best indicator of fume levels.

When I bought the house a couple of years ago, I called the local fire dept and asked them about storage of gas.. I figured they would know best.  They said, for a closed container (e.g. capped gas can), no problem storing it in the garage.  its the open container left in the closed space that will get you.  That said, I keep the sealed gas cans in the oposite corner of garage from the gas furnace and water heater.

I stored gasoline in a sealed GI Jerry can in my garage for 3 years no problems. I burned the gas when the price hit $2/gal a couple years ago.

WARNING, MAKE DOUBLE YOUR CONTAINERS ARE FOR GASOLINE, there are also containers for diesel fuel, these containers won't last long because the gasoline will dissolver or soften the rubber gaskets.
