Anyone ever thought of ,packing away some of the weight gainer ,that is used for body building. It's easy to find , and is already powdered , only needs water to use , and would be a great source of calorie intake.

What do you think ??

Any down sides that you can think of ?  hinking.gif

Aside from any spoilage issues, I think highly concentrated sources of calories and nutrients would definitely be a plus.

That is the first time I have ever heard that idea, and I think it is a very good one. Immagine, you have your 20 or 30 people at you bugout, and you all start having to manually plant enough food for all. The energy requirements for something like that are enormous. As an afternoon pick me up, have the laborers drink up a glass of that stuff. 1 glass is like what, 2000 calories.

Anyone know shelf life?

ETA: After a few minutes of reading up on it, sounds like it is actually a little bit of a gimmic for weightlifters. Hihgh protein, but many complain of it just passing right thru their system ( which could be possible dehydration issues as mentioned above). Needs more research ;)

The stuff with a lot of lactose-based protein passes through me quickly, stuff without lactose does not. However, I think I am slightly lactose intolerant.
It is not a gimmick, I think it would work well. Though one serving is more in the 250 to 500 calorie range (depending on type and specified purpose).

Look at Muscle Milk. It gives you a pretty broad spectrum of stuff. I used it and it worked pretty good. I don't know how it would work as a meal replacement, but that is what you need to look at.

The powdered weight gainer is a very interesting and logical idea.

Yes the gastro issues can exist. It may be lactose or it just may be that one's digestive system becomes overwhelmed with a highly concentrated food source.
Experiment well before any true need to be sure to avoid problems.
Supplements run the spectrum of nutrient and calorie counts. Some are all jacked up with body-builder specific supplements and some are more basic food source ingredients.

Good idea. Do watch for the possibility of a belly ache when trying any new food.

That's actually a pretty damn good idea. Good out of the box thinking. I used to drink that stuff when I was in high school. I was big in martial arts and trained for 2.5 hrs, every weeknight at the studio. I would make 2 cups of the stuff every night just to maintain my weight. It is great calorie replacement. Used to mix with milk, ice cream, and peanut butter. MMMMMMMMMMmmmm!

im pretty big into body building.
i usually drink whey powder shakes and pre mixed muscle milk in chocolate from costco.
i tried weight gainer a couple years ago.
it probably wouldnt be BAD to have, but i'd recommend using whey protein powder (not weight gainer) and then eating portion of carbs, like rice, wheat bread, potato, can of fruit, etc. instead of just the weight gainer.

the reason why i dont like weight gainer is because it tore my stomach up like you would not believe. i think it was because the calories are so concentrated and you can literally eat a days worth of calories in one weight gainer shake. worst stomach ache i've ever had.
so if you do use this stuff, i'd start out with 1/4 of the recommended dose and dont chug it. if you search the body building boards they all recommend this one brand of weight gainer, which the name slips my mind right now.

by the way, the pre mixed muscle milk by the case from costco in chocolate is the best tasting protein shake out, hands down. i'd rather drink them then eat any chocolate ice cream or milk shake.

Myoplex Deluxe comes in 3.4 oz. packets, great for BOB's.  Can be mixed quickly in a Nalgene or mixed right in the packet with a splash of water into a paste.  320 cal. 53g protein, 27 g carbs, plus aminos and vitamins.

This came up a while back.  If you are active (aerobically) running, moving, etc then weight gainer might not be the best.

I use a product made by hammer nutrition called perpetum.  This & gel works well for me for up to about 36 hours of continuous hard exertion, then I have to start mixing in some real food (sandwhiches, beef jerkey, etc).  When you are exerting, blood is not in your digestive tract, so digestion is harder.  Perpetum is designed for this.

Also, I've found ensure to be handy.  Not really for bob, but I can ride by on the bike and someone can hand me two ensures and I have enough calories for two hours - And you can drink them pretty quickly.

Donuts work pretty good for me, but they don't store well.

Some things that crossed my mind:

- Whey is digested VERY quickly whereas casein is digested very slowly, which would give you a more sustained source of calories.

- Look out for empty calories in weight gainers, i.e. sugars. The more you can keep your blood sugar levels on an even keel, the better off you'll be.

- Shelf life of protein, even if vacuum packed?

- Possible extra hydration requirements?

- Need for good vitamin nutrition, and shelf life thereof

I think I would use the casein protein during the day instead of at night and try to follow the Warrior Diet for the rest of the time.

yeah, casein digests much slower than whey.
survival purposes, i'd go with casein over whey.

i think muscle milk is mostly casein based

not to mention, its the best tasting shake out

optimum nutrition sells cheap but very good tasting and quality proteins and weight gainers.

Im not w/ the comp but there are a lot of companies out there and optimum is worth checking out when you factor in price, taste and quality. www.dpsnutrition.net/ is a good place to order lots of nutritional products cheap.. might as well look into protein bars they are a great survival item as well IMO
