Why don't we have a BOV/ ATV forum?

I am thinking about going on the upcoming OHV camp out, but I don't have any way of carrying extra fuel. Does anyone have experience with the gas can carriers or the Kolpin fuel packs?

I like the low profile fuel packs but they are pretty pricey. Around $89.

The gas can carriers are less expensive, but they stick out from the back of the ATV and would seem to get in the way more during backing up in tight quarters.

I have a big pack that straps to the back of the ATV for carrying my gear. I am just trying to figure out the fuel situation.

Any thoughts would be great!

Unfortunately, I can't suggest anything that isn't bubbafied as I rarely go farther than a tank of gas. In the past I have ratchet strapped two 2.5 G tanks down on the back rack.

Just siphon gas from other guys tanks after they pass out. Then give them crap the next day for having a gas-guzzling atv.

ETA The guys at The Alaska ATV forum might give you some ideas.

Mine has 2 FULL SIZE fuel tanks .  I carry an MFC strapped to a rack padded with pvc pipe insulation to keep it from cracking on a rough trail.

I use this one HERE

Its a great tank and I take it into heavy duty trails and never leaked
I highly recomend them. I put it under a Pack and load it down with hunting stuff

I've got two of the low profile fuel packs - mine hold 3.5 gallons each. They ride very well with the supplied velcro attachment straps.  (two sportsman 500's) front rack or back rack - doesn't matter.

I just mount them right on the factory racks and you can go for a VERY long way. Never had one come off unexpectedly either.

I just ordered two of these, but they didn't come in until this week so will be mounting and trying them out this weekend.

Gas Hauler

I had been pricing this exact model on a number of sites for twice as much on average and was kind of shocked to find it on SG for that price.

I actually first found it on an ATV site that allowed you to chose gear by ATV model so it should fit.

I think I like the hitch carrier types best but with a small ATV I worried about the weight distribution.  The carrier I bought, two five gallon Blitz ought to be right at the rack weight recommendation with some room for some light stuff like ground mats and then the heavy camping gear on the front rack to even the load weight.

I have been looking at this trailer to help with the load that Fatcat and I will be taking. Personally, I can get by on what we can carry on the quad, but she wants more comfort.

I figure we can get a cooler, gas can and water jug on it without a problem. It is this or going light and using a milk crate to hold the gas can. I will be good either way.

That is the exact one I am looking at right now. I was even thinking about buying the brackets so I can carry it upright.

I think weight distribution is important as well so I will probably just remove my gun rack on the front and just strap it down on the front rack. My camping gear will go on the back.

I looked at the ones that hang off the back and haven't made up my mind as to weather I would like it or not. I am going to stop by a store today and look at both options.

ATV Hitch Haul

They are on sale at Cabela's for $50.  I plan to carry fuel on the back of the quad and use this for the light stuff.

I was also looking at the trailer that Rouge Toad is thinking about.  I really like it, but wonder how it will ride with no suspension.  I was thinking about buying THIS ONE and cutting it down so the width is 48" overall.  I think the Polaris 4/4 bolt pattern wheels will fit so that I could put some off road tires on it.  I will probably wait until after our May OHV campout and see how his works.

I have looked at those Koplin carriers at a local store and they seem very sturdy, but I just have a hard time spending 80 or 90 bucks for a 4 gallon gas can.

You would certainly have to cut the width down if you were going to use Polaris tires and wheels..the offsets of both the front and rear wheels are pretty severe.

I'm at work so I dont have the link handy but I found a place that sells the front boxes that hold two 1.5 or 2.5 gal. fuel cans. I thought it was a good idea for a BOATV because the fuel could not be seen by anyone who couldnt see inside the box.

Wallmart sells an item very similar to that ATV hitch hall for $39 and change. says its rated for 200lbs. I picked one up today, will see how it holds up on the Rhino.

+1 for an ATV section it would be a good addition to the outdoors forum

I ended up picking up the kolpin fuel pack. It seems like its an extremely expensive gas can..... oh, wait, it is!

I am planning on hauling it on my front rack so the gun rack has to go. I am not sure if its okay to haul it with the funnel inside the pack. The rubber gasket seals great, but I don't know if the funnel is designed for that. I guess I will find out when I fill it the first time.

what I hear about the koplin is it expands greatly when exposed to sun.

He'll need to put some metal flashing over the cooler then! Can't let that beer get warm!!

I like that Kolpin fuel pack but can't get my cheap ass to come off that kind of money. Right now I've got two one gallon plastic cans squeezed between the bars on the front rack and being held in place with a rubber bungee strap. Works good but limits my use of the front rack. What I'm looking at doing to replace it is making a bracket to hold a military jerry can holder then bolting the bracket and can holder to the back rack on the left side away from the exaust and then using one of my extra metal gas cans in place of the two one gallon cans. I'd be able to carry more than twice the gas and still be able to use both racks.

Dude, what's wrong with two gas cans and a little tie down action?  SF is all about adaptability, so who cares if it's a "home made solution" or "redneck rigged"?

I dug deep several years ago for a pair of those Kolpin flat pack fuel cans, when they were ONLY $75.  They are very nice, very heavy strong plastic, and the cap fits very tight.

No way in heck would I use one of those fuel carriers like the one that TJ posted along with a regular Wal*Mart style gas can.  Those cans are designed to be carried up right, and tend to leak if tipped on their side, or upside down.  Even worse if it's the kind like in the picture that have the spout sticking out like that.  It'll snap right off on a branch or if rolled.

The last thing I want if I should ever roll my 4 wheeler, is gas leaking on me.

I know we all like to red-neck engineer solutions, but safety isn't one place where I'm willing to compromise on price, especially $90 worth.   I'd rather spend $90 on a gas can than sit in a hospital with 1st degree burns from leaking fuel from a $10 can.
