I was showing a buddy some of my new toys/preps/ improvements today and he said something about how safe is my stuff where it's at. I talked about it for a bit then he pointed out that anyone that knew me or about me would never think of screwing with my stuff. I thought it was pretty funny....Then I though he made a pretty good point. Reputation is a pretty good deturrent, dont ya think? I have some securtiy upgrades to make very soon, but I have been gone away "playing" for over a year at a time and have never had a problem, but still, I need to reenforce the bunker. How safe is your stuff? |
|
There are two ways to secure your "stuff": operational security and physical security. You shoudl use both. Like Protus alluded to, if no one knows about your stash, no one will be inlcined to try and take it. That goes for your planning and prepping phase (pre-SHTF) and how you utilize your supplies during SHTF. It's all well and good that none of your neighbors knows you have loads of suppplies, but how about when you are the only home in the neighborhood with lights and the BBQ has steaks on it? Second, reinforce your home/BOL to make it to prevent common theft as well as dedicated attack. Numerous threads on this here . . . |

Most of my stuff is stashed in my office bedroom's closet, some under the stairs leading to the second floor, and the rest in the garage. Nobody goes into these areas very often. Only the garage sees some foot traffic but my bottled water and first aid supplies are hidden from sight. My home is pretty secure in that my wife is at home while I'm at work. Humans are difficult to defeat, dogs and alarms less so. |
| Reutation is a double edged sword. You could be the scary guy that walks around no one messes with, but not everyone will be scared and you may be the first singled out in an altercation. Physically im 215 pound guy who benched 350 and squats over 400 so im decently strong, Ive served in the Infantry, I am an avid shooter, I take MMA, and Im a tactical instructor for sayoc Kali and have trained multiple special forces units. I use to walk around with tapout shirts and looked like a hard ass most of the time and none of my friends would ever mess with me and it was mostly a deterent from other people too. But there has been times when I was younger where brawls would break out (Im not one to ever start fights as I think they are stupid) and once the two groups start fighting a few times I was singled out as the bigger guy and was jumped from the rear and by multiple attackers when the others I was with were not. Today you'll see me walking around in a pink shirt and sandals... why is that? even though I look physically bigger I do not look intimidating and do not draw attention to myself yet am still more than capable of handling myself. I want the element of suprise and dont want people to expect the unexpected. In Kali knife fighting the best way to take on an attacker is to smile at him right up until your blade penetrates his flesh.... I think its just something to think about. Being low key a and not being intimidating seems to keep you out of more trouble and when trouble does arise you usually have the element of suprise..... as holy crap that kid in the gay looking clothes just wooped ur ass...... this goes beyond fighting though,,,, just blend in... |

I once got a tenured teacher fired, am on friendly terms with the popo, etc. which seems to have given me the reputation of being the wrong dude to mess with. I'm not very physically imposing (5' 8" and out of shape 200) but I have the reputation of being tough and knowing how to use the system. that alone helps... My neighbors are of the opinion that if shtf, they'd ask me because "He always knows what to do when bad stuff happens." Hopefully, between the two, folks will leave my stuff alone. Ops |
Id rather be unseen/unheard than to have ANY kind of reputation within the community, weather is good, bad or ugly. If you think your a tuff guy (generally speaking) there is always someone that is tuffer and will challenge you in some form or fashion. Like I said, I down play everything. |
| an old proverb appropo' here. "it's better to have more lightening in the hand than thunder in the mouth". the less people know about what you have the less likely they are to spread the word about your preps. to the casual eye, my family has a pantry full of food and a gun or two. few people outside of family members know we have a cellar w/ preps. most don't even know the house has a cellar. |
|
My preps are hiding in plain sight. There's no hidden cache of gear or whatever and except for a well-stocked pantry you'd never give it a second thought. I try to be realistic about things. Plan for the worst but live each day as if it's your last; works for me. J. |
Welp we ALL do now. Nice going, you just FAILED OpSec 1o1. |
Preps? What are those? Guns? I shoot my shotgun once or twice a year while hunting. Survivalist? Aren't they those white supremacist/militia/alien abduction guys who think the world is coming to an end? If a natural disaster hits, I'll follow all .gov recommendations/edicts and head for the superdome.![]() |
lol. now you just need to determine which of the 1,607,349 homes in oklahoma is mine. |
Ahh but see, thats where your wrong. Osama never would have set foot on US soil had he known what kind of fury would be unleashed. He had become so accustomed to screwing with us and having little or no retaliation from clinton that he decided that the "US is a paper tiger and will never commit ground troops to forigen soil". There is a lot to be said for keeping very quiet too but that is not an option for me. Im a high profile person in a small town. But I do have stuff that no one knows about much less where it's at. It will stay that way. The preps I was talking about in this case is the giant work bench/storage for all my stuff that I just finished to organise all my crap that is currently piled in several out building and cannot be found. |

I just had this kinda of experience. MY WIFE mentions to her sister and NEW boyfreind that I am a big hunter and have a bunch of "toys". What is their next question? Can we see them? SO She yells for me to come down and if front of them says, they want to see your toys. Kind of putting me on the spot. I of course show them my FUDD collection Well part of it. No sense opening all the safes. Any way, after they leave for the night. My wife says, I didn't know you had all that stuff. I replied, "never mention those again". She now agrees that people should not know about the FUDDS. |

I keep it in general terms-learned from Katrina, 6 hour to 2 day power failures and stuff. We like to camp so that is our cover..... the stuff we have, doesn't appear too strange. The bulk stuff is out of site in the basement and back up area. You can't see it looking down the stairs or walking around the house. |
LMAO, I have heard that and it wasn't from talking....From 15 or more years ago, Paramedic ona private ambulance in the remote hills of Cali (don't laugh, if you have not seen most of Cali, you would be redneck stunned!) we had been with out power for three days from and ice storm. Yea, I made it to work when the roads were closed (four hour drive in good weather), NBD, just drive over or cut the trees. Anyway Day five at work rolls around and we, me and my partner have been camped at the most remote station for two days without power or heat or anything....people are calling us on the radio and asking if we need to come to town to charge radios, ect, Genny kept tellimg them no, we are fine...My relief shows up on day six of no power and is stuned to see us warm, well lighted, cable TV and fully charged radios... How the Fawk he asks? Everyone else for twenty miles is in the dark and y'all are warm and happy? He then see's the extension cord running out of the house, follows it out side to the ambulance and finds it pluged into the inverter.... BIG arsa dude walks back in and says " when the worle we know comes to an end, I want to be with you!?" Not gay.. It's called common sense or thinking outside of the box.... |
