So i'm factoring a new SKS into my survival plans as my GHB weapon for now, may change.  I have an old, chinese style chest rig for stripper clips that holds 200 rounds, and a US Army black nylon sling.

what sort of upgrades are there for this stuff?  i'm not looking for a three-point sling for an SKS (that'd look ridiculous) but i would like suggestions on a rig to carry strippers (i like blondes).  anyone plan on using an SKS for BO or GH care to weigh in?

Three point slings look sexy, but if you ever use them for real in a carbine class or tactical rifles match, you'll ditch it quick for a 2 point (or even single).  Don't get me wrong, I'm not just trying to piss in the wind I have used an SKS in these matches and I learned a lot about what worked and what didn't.

Here's a pic of my fat arse pokign the SKS-D through the port and blating away:

As far as the Stripper go, the chest rig is probably your best bet for the SKS.  It's simple and simple works.

I would recommend you find a carbine class or find some type of training place that will run you through the ringer wiht it and you'll find out yourself what works and what doesn't!

Just stick to a regular sling.  I have a Chicom SKS.  I removed the bayonet and the area where the bayonet used to be attached.  Stripper clips are great but as long as you tried and test them.  Make sure that stripper clips are smooth when you are loading your SKS.  I do not have any upgrades with mine.  It's pretty much a KISS SHTF rifle.

Agreed, just get a two point sling and call it a day. If you already have a chest rig, you ought to be fine.

One thing I would recommend if you plan to rely on the rifle is upgrading the firing pin. All later SKS were made with "free floating" firing pins that tend to gum up with crap and run into slam fire issues. My Yugo did this, and I have seen others at the range with the same problem. Some folks have had good luck with this.

Edit: For link.

Keep it simple.  A lot of people go overboard customizing SKSs, but they're fine out of the box.

The SKS is absolutely fine as is...  There is NO need for ANY additional upgrade.  Every single 'upgrade' I've ever seen for the SKS has been, in my opinion, a serious down grade.  There is all kinds of tacticool garbage you can hang on an SKS, and none of it is worth much.

The SKS works fine as is.  You need the carbine, ammo, stripper clips, a basic cleaning kit (perferabbly including an ammonia-based solvent for corrosive ammo), a sling and a basic chinee chest rig.  That's it....

My Yugo 59/66's easily print 2.5" groups at 100 (Benched) with Portugese FNM Mil surp ammo and Wolf 154 grn SP.  Thats damned good for an iron sighted carbine.  Reliability if 100%.  What more do you need?

The only two upgrades that I can recommend for an SKS are:

1. An ambidextrous safety if you are left handed, and can find one.  Keng's Firearms Specialties used to, dunno if they still have them.

2. Replace the rear sight with a Williams or Mojo peep.  This will enhance accuracy quite a bit and if you use a large aperture it's as fast or faster than the open notch.

Other than that, buy a bunch of stripper clips and ammo, and practice running the gun.

IMHO all you need are strippers and the peep sight.  The ambi safety i think is a joke since the safety on the SKS is a bit awkward anyways.  To be completely honest I don't use the safety on any of my rifles except my AR15's, all the others I just keep the chamber clear.

Williams peep sight and a trigger job.Bill springfield in colorado springs. i'm not sure if he still does them, but he did mine and is top notch. [email protected].

It was $26 IIRC which included return shipping. Night and day after I got it back.

Good advice here. The best upgrade you can get is taking it to a class and or running a case of ammo through it during all sorts of drills.

Thanks for all the info guys!  I think i'm gonna keep my current setup, and do some training.  I will definitely be getting the firing pin thingie, tho i will keep the original sights (it IS a really nice norinco) so it still looks original.  I'm not worried about the trigger.  Yeah, it feels like crap, but it won't be required to shoot <2MOA or shoot more than 150-200 yds.

Depending on how much rrom you have in your vehicle, and whether or not you might have to conceal the SKS you may want to consider a foling stock - depends on your situation but it's far from "necessary"

I really like the SKS. Cheap, Mil-Spec, Good enough for almost any SHTF need.

I have TAPCO'ed the crap out of a couple only to realize the gun was fine as it was in the original config. (like others have said)

Make sure you try out those stippers (insert non-work-safe pun here ) til you have a good supply that WORK SMOOTHLY in your gun. Most of the Chinese clips need a bit of tweaking and break-in before they work reliably without binding. OTOH- all the Yugo clips I have tried (not that many) have worked great without a problem.

I have an old, chinese style chest rig for stripper clips that holds 200 rounds, and a US Army black nylon sling.

I actually use a T-68 Chicom chest rig for my AR. I put a paracord extension loop on each loop (that goes around the wood peg) to accomadate the slightly longer magazines. The Chicom military stuff isn't bad quality. What you have should work very well.

i like it, it rides well, and it's similar to the cummerbund style rig i wear for my M4.  The only downside is that one of the pegs is ripped off and theres a nasty brown stain on two of the top flaps on the left side...
