I just saw a thread on tb2k about this company: zennioptical.com Apparently, you can get prescription glasses for very low prices. The folks on TB2k seemed satisfied. Has anyone here bought glasses from them? |
| sorry, I just get the free ones that my insurance pays for. (they always will provide 100% coverage for prescription safety glasses once a year, plus around 50% for other frames and some amount for the lenses) I try to get the thinnest possible so wearing them doesn't give me a headache. But I only wear contacts during the summer, my eyes don't like sunlight very much, so they are always covered by the darkest lens that oakley makes. |

Read at the link.Lots of good info on several companies. Also prescription goggles and safety/shooting glasses.I have a pair from Zenni and 39 dollar glasses. Im happy with both. Jim www.glassyeyes.blogspot.com |

I wear contacts so only need glasses around the house and for backup. I bought a pair from $39 Glasses and have been satisfied. Had them now for probably 3-4 years and just as durable as high-dollar ones. Not very stylish, but fits my need beautifully. However it looks like Zenni is even cheaper -- might give them a try for a backup pair at $8! |

I was looking to get some prescription safety glasses and it turns out the optical place in my local Walmart will give individuals the price they sell safety glasses to the factory employees for. I got a set of prescription safety glasses with the removable side shields for about $30.00. They seem to be really good lenses, I've used mine for mowing around trees for 1 1/2 years now as well as a million other jobs that are tough on glasses and they are hardly scratched. If your Walmart would do that it would be a good way to get a extra pair of glasses cheap. John |
+1 Wal-Mart is a pretty decent for prescription safety glasses |

I think I'm going to take the plunge. What I'm really looking for is contacts... most places want a doc's prescription and my doc ain't playing ball, telling them my script expired at the end of last year. Any reputable dealers out there that will sell w/o the script from the doc? I've got the containers with the #'s... John |
find another optometrist. By law they have to give you a copy of the script if you ask for it. maybe in IL it's different
|
Not if it is expired. They have an expiration date just like a Rx for meds. If it is a current Rx (12 months) then yes, they have to give it to you if you want a copy. |
I get my prescription from a qualified doctor. but even with insurance a new pair of glasses is over $100. So why not take the prescription and send away for an $8 pair of back ups. My current expensive glasses are so scratched up after a home project I get head aches the back ups have the same prescription and work great and look fine. Keep spending I will Keep Saving |
There's much better places to save than your sight, I use my glasses 18 hours a day, much more than my $1000.00 flat screen or my $1500.00 computer. or my AR, or the cases of ammo i have for SHTF. I personally want quality optics to see these things , not alone make sure I don't screw up my vision with inferior molded lenses instead of precision ground high quality lenses. I find paying more for my glasses than my watch a sound financial investment. Would you by $8.00 boots to wear all day every day??? probably not, but your going to put $8.00 glasses on for more hours a day than your boots. |
One of my uncles was an eye surgeon/prof at John Hopkins. He always said eyeglasses were the BIGGEST ripoff: lenses actually cost a couple bucks a pair! So if paying $20 for a McDonalds $1 double cheeseburger makes it taste better to you, carry on! (I don't need glasses, so my opinion may well be worth what you paid) |
Military did it for years and years. How much do you really think a pair of jungle boots cost them if WE could get them for $39.99? |
|
I used to work for one of those large "1-hour" eye glass places while in college. I could get glasses at cost and while the frames could be had for half the sticker price the $48 lenses were $3. The coatings (anti-scratch and tint) are basically vats of heated liquid that the lenses are dipped in. The retail cost can be justified due to overhead, but the materials cost is very low. . |

Like some have mentioned above, these cheap glasses have a place. Need a spare set for the car incase you break you r main pair? $8 is perfect. I have them from Zenni and some other place. I used Zenni for my OLD uncle who is in a nursing home and just needs them for reading. He already had a stroke, and being in a nursing home, they tend to get lost or stolen. This is a perfect answer for him. Being that this is a survival board, I fully advocate having a spare pair of specs around. I keep a spare set in the car, one in the night stand, and take one when traveling. To the credit of the nay-sayers: No, my $8 specs are nothing like my $300 flexy pair from the doc's office. I have used them for driving, reading and computer work, and they do induce more eye strain. BUT - in a pinch, and to save my rear should something happen to these... my $8 pairs are a fine deal. |

I have worn cheap boots thanks to the army for 20-24 hours a day. Cheapest bidder. I have used less than the best safety equipment due to budget cuts Hell I have even drank Cheap Beer when my wallet was a little light. I find the glasses I got from Zenni to not be inferior. I have pulled a 24 hour shift as a paramedic wearing them with little eye fatigue or headaches that my expensive glasses that are scratched give me after just a few hours. But then again I dont drive a Ferrari or a Porsche. I drive a car that gets me from point A to point B. I guess there are things I dont feel I need to pay overly exorbitant prices for. As for $800 optics I actually prefer Iron Sights but then again I am a traditionalist. |
