Got into a disscusion with a friend. We were talking about ultimate survival setup... Stocking it up with food and other suplies. We got to the first aid portion of our fantasy and came up with a question. Just how long would folks have viable pain meds (major) after a shit hit the fan scenario? How long does morphine (liquid in glass ampule) stay good? What does it turn into? Will it be long, after all hell breaks lose, till we are amputating legs while holding down the patient?

I'm not a doctor but I played with one once...and she said I was goood.

I'm a veteran, and I've been on pain meds for years.

I believe that in a SHTF situation, you'll have a few folks that know how to produce poppies, the opiate type and others that have alkaloids that would be of use, that will produce crude but effective pain meds.

that's why having a chemist/pharmacist in your group would be a good thing to have around. Also, my uncle used to say, chances are if you need the morphine, your in a bad situation.

a bad situation.....if you need morphine you're FUCKED no two ways about it.

yup that too....you really need to know your stuff when working with narcotic level pain meds....heck you need to know what people are allergic to even when you give them OTC pain meds

Were you at a Holiday Inn?

IMHO, there are a LOT of situations where one could and should stock medical supplies above and beyond their personal training level. One situation is like mine: I have some suturing supplies and intend to go to an EMT class. Another situation is one in which you are bugged-out, or others have bugged out to YOUR location, and one or more of them IS an MD, EMT or a vet. In other words, it don't hurt to have supplies on hand for the experts to use IF they are with you.

ETA
BTW... morphine is niiiice... I had a kidney stone recently and after the third shot,  I told the nurse, "Le's do dizz more oftin..." She decided I could go home then.

Hell you can plant poppies in the garden, the chemistry is not all that hard to refine the sap. I mean it has been done for hundreds of years.
