Hiya Guys: I'll readily admit that as much as an axe is 'fun', it's hard to beat the utility and safety of a small bow saw for most wood cutting needs. However, there is something neat about a good axe. Like many I've suffered along with many a cheap assed junk hatchet. Those damned hardware store wedge shaped atrocities that are all but useless. Some time ago I picked up a small Estwing hatchet, and this has been an improvement. The bit is thin enough and of steel good enough to hold an edge. This little hatchet cuts relatively well. Unfortunately, it is still at hatchet: Its small, light and has a short handle, so it really isn't up to real cutting chores. A full sized axe often seems too damned big and heavy to actually take anywhere. Well, I found something 'in between'. It's definitely larger than any hatchet yet smalll enough to handy. Its the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. The head weighs a pound and a half and its mounted on a 19" handle. It has enough weight and length to actually accomplish some decent chopping. They also make a very similar Hunters Axe. Same size and wieght, with a rounded and polished 'flay poll' designed for removing hide from your deer or moose. The Hunters axe also has something of an improved grip on the handle. I just picked up the Hunters Axe. It's purely utilitarian, but very effective. Small enough to actually take somewhere, big enough to be useful. And shaving sharp. They are not cheap, but quality rarely is... Frozenny |
