Now it's our turn thru central PA.  As of this posting, we still have power and phone lines, with about one inch of granular sleet/freezing rain on the ground and still falling.
Generator and tractor to drive it are in the garage and run tested last night.

Updates if it gets interesting.

Doing good here in SW PA about 1/2 inch of ice on the cars. Roads "look" fine and I've seen some cars going by without any problems. There are some amazing icecicles everywhere, hanging off all the powerline and weighing all the trees down. Hell their's even icecicles on the road signs.

I'll let you guys know if my power goes out.

Came through here last night too. Had to chip ice off the truck for 20 mins after work this am. Lots of ice on the trees but it seems to have quit building up at this point.

Well, here we are, 5 hours later.  Power went out at about 1530, restored by 2030.  We did manage to choke down the tractor somewhat, with one heat pump, electric WH, water pump, one electric stove top element and the microwave.  That's about 10kW or so, so now my limitations on power usage are tractor horsepower, not gennie kW.

We had a nice pot roast, in a warm and illuminated house..   The storm itself is about wound down, lots of ice here and there but it looks like melting has begun.  The tractor itself went thru slightly less than half a tank, about 4 to 5 gallons, so a full tank will run 10 hours.  No overheating, etc althogh the gearcase on the generator did get pretty warm.

The lane is plowed out, juice is back on, and normalcy returns.

It devastated Oklahoma we had the largest outage in state history.  I have over 3/4 people at work without power and my church is a Red Cross shelter right now.  I am prepared and did not lose a minute of power.  but the people at work are crying and crying about how hard life is.

Oh well

same here.  we were ready to go, but only lost power for about a minute.  i stopped in to wally world tuesday, my mt. dew supply was low, and you'd think it was TEOTWAWKI.  there were no batteries, flashlights, etc.  i wondered what it would look like if the stuff really htf?

@ops, how many HP does your tractor have?

It's a 17 HP Kubota, spinning a 15kW gennie.  I think 25 HP would nave been better, even though the 17 has excellent fuel economy, less that 1 GPH under load.

wow, i'm impressed. i figured you were going to say 25-30 hp.  i have a 35hp mahindra and have debated doing the pto genny or large stand alone.  we have a small 5k watt gas genny that gets us by for now.

edit:  look at that post 100.  lol.

The storm will come through Ohio this weekend.  We're expecting 3-5 inches of snow in Central Ohio and up to a foot of snow near Cleveland.  Even many "non-prepers" I know are stocking up for the weekend.

they're predicting 3"-6" of snow starting friday night and saturday morning.  still about 200k w/o power here, so it'll be interesting to see if we get the snow.  a lot of areas haven't recovered yet.

Does your genny have oiler ports over the rotor shaft bearings? I've found on some old tractor I've bought that the ports on the starter and (12V or 6V) generator are often covered in gunk, dirt, old grease, etc. and probably haven't been serviced in many years. Same with grease zerks-- they seem to hide pretty well under layers of gunk. Seems like everytime I read a manual or chip away decades-old gunk I find something new that I didn't know I needed to oil or grease. (I even burnt up an oil-filled fan hub that way on an old Farmall. Thank God for eBay! )

mines been out since 10/10:30am monday, to approx 2pm this afternoon, I had to move all my can goods and water to the bunker to keep it from possibly freezing though, night time temps been getting down in the high 20s,

as for me, I just broke out the sleeping bag, farted in it a few times to keep me warm for the night, and used the coleman latern to see a bit, kinda reminded me of back when I used to live like an indian, except I don't have an woodstove in the living room or a outhouse out back,

been pissing in the woods behind my house and shitting at work,

plus I didn't have to take a bath outta a bucket, I been taking a ice cold shower everymorning at the local state park on my way to work,

except this morning, I drove 25 miles to my sister's house to take a hot shower, got tired of it taking my balls two hours to decend back to their normal swinging position.

man, that's no shit, we're doing twice the business we normaly do this time of the week, seems like every patron I spoke to was in the casino just so they could stay warm and have some hot coffee, some just got bored, but all in all 95% were unprepared for what hit,

hell we had employees calling in absent because they didn't have electricity, it just didn't figure, any fucking excuse not to come in I guess,

mgt even opened the doors for them and their family's to come in a stay in the event room (150'x100'), complete with restrooms and showers, and several did so they wouldn't miss work, but most didn't,

the tribe opened it's two community centers located within two miles of the casino for anyone in the community to stay until they got power restored, most that took them up on the offer were elderly.

What oil are you using?  Oftentimes a symthetic will make it run a lot cooler.  Most tractor stores used to carry a moly additive, but a straight synthetic fill usually works better.
