I'm in college, lets say someday someone comes to my school and starts shooting, and I'm like 20 ft away, do I pull out my knife, and jump the guy if possible, or run the other way? This is a gun free zone mind you.

Just asking what I should do if their is ever a shooting, no there wasn't a school shooting today.

I must be paranoid.

Carry a gun anyway.  I did.....

Throw a chair, blast him w/ a fire extinguisher, tackle and put your pencil through his eye, don't stop beating him until the threat is over.  Do what you can with what you have...  Almost anything can be a weapon...  if you have a knife, use it.

why risk your life if you don't need to.  No need to attack unless you have no other option.

Yep, rushing a person with a gun is generally a great way to end up dead.  However, each situation would be so totally different that any advice you get here will be purely speculative.

Just WAY too many variables.

Im in the same boat you are, going to a gun free campus.  Scary as hell.  I dont carry because the repurcussions are pretty severe (even though I do have a CCW).  This Christmas Im probably going to get one of those Kimber OC spray units, that shoot our like 20 feet.  Other than that like the guy said, throw your bag, throw your hat, anything that you can distract or delay with.  I always sit closest to the door or closest to one side, and ALWAYS scrutinize whos coming in.  I figure I'll either die quick, escape, or have the best chance at stopping them.  I guess the other option is to sit in back and wait for him to run dry, but I couldnt watch someone kill off that many people, hoping he didnt get to me.

Another option is moving to Utah, where CCW's are legal on University Campuses.  I almost did it.

Good luck and stay Condition Yellow.

ETA: Just saw your in CO.  I go to UCCS, you?

I go to Front Range Community College in Longmont.

The fire extinguisher idea is a good one.

really if it is your only chance at survival and escape isn't an option you might as well try.  Though if you attack, attack with the intent of killing and not incapacitating.

But if you try to be a hero and take the guy down you'll probably sooner end up dead than anything else.

Don't worry, it's a gun free zone. You are safe.

Would rather rush the attacker and die trying than to be shot in the back. You decide.

My personal rules for a gunfight

1 DON'T GO TO A GUNFIGHT.

2 VICTORY GOES TO THE ONE WHO PLASTERS HIS ENEMY WITH LETHAL FIREPOWER FIRST.(Rommel)

If you cant obey 1 then make 2 work.

Put anything between you and a shooter: chair, book bag, landscaping, etc.  See rule 2 and reduce their lethality.

ans as others have said If you can disable a shooter do so.

Ok lets say the guy enters and he gets off a few rounds when you encounter him.
A. You can run away and you might be safe but the guys moves through the building
   killing dozens of students.

B. You can rush him and stop the shooting

C. You can rush him and get shot.

I would say it depends how close you are.  If I have to run down a long hallway to get to him I would not rush him. If I have a knife and are 15 or less feet away from him I would go for it with the chance you can get the knife to his vitals. Say you rush him and running you can cover ground quick If he hits you you are going to be traveling so fast that most likely you could make it to him and crash into him and do the best you can with your knife. Its up to you if you run away and get to safety yes you are alive but have to live with not doing shit when you could have done something and saved lifes.
Would you rather him kill 5 people plus you or 40 people and you are safe. Is your life worth the lives of 35 people? That is what you have to ask yourself If you are willing to sacrifice yourself to save others.

Carry a gun anyway, I do.  I got to a gun free zone school as well.  It's not illegal for me though, just against "school policy".

You are in Utah, though.  In Colorado it is illegal.  Not against state law, but AG Salazar years back made a statement saying Universities could make their own laws or some such nonsence.  I cant remember what the penalty is though if your caught.  But it probably involves being expelled and taken away in cuffs, as well as losing your guns.  I guess its a personal choice.

But you can be damned sure I will be standing there with my card if the school gets blasted, letting every news reporter on the planet know that I could have defended myself.  And if I go, my whole family gets to do it.

This is a personal decision. There is no way any of us could tell you what you would, or should do in this situation.

Bad advice.

If his school is "gun free" because of a policy, yes carrying a gun is merely a trespassing charge.

If it is like this state, it is a crime and he will go to jail/fined.

Its a judgement call per each situation.  Attack if you feel lucky or have nothing to loose.  Glass cuts as you bail thru the window and a broken bone on impact might be better choices.

Lots of things are weapons.... the fire extinguisher is a good one, but scope it out, if its water it wont be as good as dry chem or CO2.  If its small you better make it count and move fast.  OC spray is good and legel in most places....  Bear spray is in bigger cans and goes farther.  Bee killer, the kind that goes 20 ft.  A knife if you are close, but dont be locked into the knife.... a lot of times bare hands are just as good.  A broom or mop handle.  A dining hall tray.

Take a self defense class.... and I dont mean a one night seminar put on by the local PD.  My wife and daughter took one and it was a major waste of time.... Spend money and time and take a real one.

Once you make the decision to attack dont stop until the gunman is dead or at least proven unconcious.  No half measures.... dont hit him hard and stand back to gauge reaction.... keep pounding away.

In the good old days gunman in buildings usually wanted something.... cash, etc.  Now its either deranged individuales or possibly terrorists.  Either way, they are not there to make deals, bring you pizza, let you go to the bathroom.... they are there to make a statement.  Once the shooting starts it wont end until the are out of ammo, vicitms, or taken out.

I have no personal experience with this matter.  I did have a good friend who was quite well-versed with a knife.  He used it several times as a Marine in WWII.  According to him, there were a couple of times when the knife was the preferred weapon because both sides would have opened up on him if he had fired his 1911.

The observation that stuck with me the most was when he noted that killing with a knife is incredibly slow and personal thing.  He said that even after he had delivered a wound to a vital organ it just seemed to take forever for the enemy to succumb to the point he could let go of them.

There's no way but in the gravest extreme would I choose a knife as my fighting tool.  I can't imagine someone without the benefit of any training doing anything but making such use a bloody and protracted affair that could get one shot in the process.

That sucks.  The spray sounds like a good idea.  I carry Fox 5.3 as well as my gun and knife.  Rather use that than a gun if I can.

Taser ? pepper sprays..
remember  there are no second place winners

Fight fight fight,,the life you save might be your fiance's,,brothers,,sisters,,or a very close friend,,,,,or even some one you never knew

chairs ,,thrown books,,fire extinguishers,,computers,,laptops, they all become weapons of choice,,because they're there.

I have little doubt that there are responsible young people who go to college and find it appalling that by policy they are being denied their God given right to defend them self, however it would be irresponsible of me to recommend you carry when it is forbidden.  The consequences of being punished if caught in todays climate is almost assured and the impact on your future not good at the least.

It has to be a personal decision since the consequences can impact your life and not mine.

I can tell you about my own personal decision in this regard.  Being a veteran and for the most part much older than my classmates and more mature, I still elected not to carry on campus.  I can assure that getting caught was only one of my concerns since getting caught had never stopped me before that or since.  Self defense or that of others was also a concern but more so was the concern that under certain circumstances I would not have control of my weapon.  Though I was mature many of those I went to school with were definitely not and their idea of fun often reckless.  To me it was a matter of odds.
