| Picked up a pair of BATES Desert Combat boots when they had that incredible sale a while back (I should've picked up 3 more pair at the price). Anyway, I wear them a lot, very comfortable, however, they need cleaning. What is the best method to clean these kind of rough side out boots? |

Nikwax has a cleaning product (and an awesome aqueous wax waterproofing product) that I use on almost every piece of footwear I have. I haven't used it on desert boots but it works on nubuck and suede. I think you should check it out and see if it sounds like it would work. linkeroo |
| They make cleaning kits that are just so-so. Essentially, the kit consists of a big eraser and a plastic brush. It doesn't work to bad, and keeps the original look of the boot. I haven't found a way to keep them from darkening eventually. I haven't used a wet solvent on them yet. I probably will when I switch to winter boots, since I'll be getting a new pair of summer for the spring. |
| I've never cleaned mine. I just let the mud/dirt cake and fall off. During the deployment it was easy because they were getting wet almost every mission working on the boat. I'm also guilty of having several pairs so I don't worry too much about keeping them too clean. |
