I will preface my post with this: I'm lurker of the survival forum. I usually only post in the weapon sections, but i enjoy reading the posts here.

I was really in the mood to buy another firearm, but I figured some land navigation equipment would help me to more effectively utilize my firearms in any situation. I went to Cabela's yesterday and picked up the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx (this one). How'd I do? I like it a lot so far. Does anyone have any experience with loading additional maps on these things. I know Garmin sells them, but are there any other options?

Thanks in advance

You have to use Garmins maps. But, you can use Topo! software to map out routes and waypoints, then upload them.

I have the Etrex legend, the little brother to yours. I've used it for everything from hiking the Smokies to tracking distance / pace running to geocaching, and I love it. I think you're going to be happy with yours.
