How to get lots of small common batteries from larger, often MUCH cheaper batteries. I have not tried this myself, but it looks legit. 6 volt to AA 12 volt to 8 button batteries 9 volt to AAA |

Good post with valuable SHTF ideas. One thing, the "heavy duty" 6V lantern battery in the picture uses the oldest carbon zinc chemistry and the poorest performing cells. They are real prone to leak. No comparison to modern alkaline batteries in run time. I think this battery's construction is sort of rare as it is made as cheaply as possible for sale at Big Lots or flea mkts. Most 6V lantern batteries use an "F" cell that is longer than a D cell as you might imagine. There are four of them in each battery and they could be used as a subsitute for D's with a little wire and tape or something. If if a cheap lantern battery is all you've got to get AA's it's better than nothing. Remember most quality lantern batteries won't have AA's in them so do your homework in advance. The other two solutions are great. |

A couple things: Sure, you may get AA's from some cheap 6 volt batteries. You may get some D cells from a cheap, but more expensive 6 volt. If you pay for a good one they have F cells in them (4/3 D cells) and have the most capacity. A23, if you have it instead of LR44's, great. If not, buy them in bulk online for about 10 cents each. 9 volt gives you AAAA's, not AAA's. You could use it in a pinch if you had to though as a AAA, but it isn't one. |
